Default New to EQ

Hi everyone,
I'm new to eq so please humor me with elementary answers
I have been reading the forums including (mostly) the monk since that is the character I decided to play, and have some really basic (ok, maybe dumb) questions that I can't find answers I can understand.
This first question is embarassing to ask because everything I've read tells me that any idiot should know what combat art and auto attack is. I've read a bunch about timing Combat Arts against Auto attacks but not sure what they are talking about. What am I timeing? How do i do a CA? how do I do the auto attacks? How do I know if I'm autoattacking or combat art attacking? As much info in very simple terms is needed as this seems to be a very important subject.
Another question, I keep reading about dev fist, dispatch and rescue but don't find anything in current monk spells or those I get at later lvl's that relate to those titles?
Finally, haste seems to be very important to monks, how do I increase my haste, is it just watching for armor to drop that have haste things on them.
I probably need to be a higher lvl to use some of the CA and Autoatacks and stuff but I need to understand now so I can develop my monk correctly from the ground up. Plus it would just be nice to be reading something I could understand.

Combat arts are skills/spells you cast. Mages and healers call them spells while scouts and fighters call them CA (Combat arts). Each level you gain new ability(s). These you cast by clicking on buttons on a hot bar.

Auto attack is just what it sounds like. Your weapon will auto attack your target depending on the delay of your weapon(s). Haste lowers that delay.

I wouldn't worry too much about haste right now. But the item you are able to get your first note worthy haste item you will have figured it out.

Honestly the best way to get the answers your seeking is to learn by doing. Most of the details on these forums relates to higher level characters. Honestly there isn't much of anything that you can do wrong in leveling your character. Most choices that you get while leveling can be changed later on with ease. The only things you can not change while leveling is your race and sex. Know what you want for them and you should be set. Get in the game and play, you will learn as you go and that is by far the best way to do it.

If you ran up to a monster, aka mob and double clicked it but didn't click on any special attack skills, you'd be only auto attacking him. Like previously stated, it's the damage you do by swinging your weapon.

If you want to be a savy player, you'll sort out your chat window by adding tabs to it and seperating the various aspects of the chat into their respective tabs.
For instance, I had one tab for group, guild, tells and raid. Another for combat (which only gave me the information I wanted to know by filtering out my friends combat stuff etc.)
This way you can get a good look at what you are doing in combat.
When you REALLY want to get advanced, you can download a special program called a "parser" (btw they aren't the easiest thing to get the hang of at first) and that will give you LOADS of information about your fights, put into a slick format for you to analyze in real time or after all the fighting is done with.

Another question, I keep reading about dev fist, dispatch and rescue but don't find anything in current monk spells or those I get at later lvl's that relate to those titles?

Devistating Fist: An ubbah skill you get from doing the Bloodline quest line, usable around lvl 35.
Find all kinds of info about eq2 here. Eq2 Wiki or for the direct link Bloodline Chronicles

Rescue: Pretty much a super taunt you get at lvl 25.

Dispatch: Brigand only skill that debuffs a mob across the board by a whole bunch.
(Debuff: To lower a stat or multiple stats on a mob. Like Mitigation vs poison, cold, physical damage etc. Or lower attack speed, defense, damage per second etc.)

2 more infamous monk skills are Tsunami (you get at lvl 57 I think) and Peel (lvl 80???) Tsunami makes you pretty much invulnerable for up to 12 seconds vs physical attacks and Peel is not just an ubber taunt, but an ubber dubber taunt with leet sauce on the side.

Finally, haste seems to be very important to monks, how do I increase my haste, is it just watching for armor to drop that have haste things on them.

Haste is a pretty much a byproduct of being a monk. We naturally gain lots of haste from our own personal buffs, but can be raised even further via equipment bonuses or buffs from other players.(Buff: A skill or spell that adds a bonus to a stat or multiple stats. Like Haste, DPS, Mitigation, Health, Power etc.)

To see what Haste does for you, first examin one of you're equipped weapons. Look at the delay number. I'll take a guess that it'll probably be a 1.6 second delay. Then type in the command /weapon and see what your actual delay is after it takes your haste bonus from buffs into effect.
