What is defense?

There are two different ideas of what the defense is in our attribute.

First one is that it's our base avoidance. It is what I believe since you get more base avoidance with more defense.

Another idea is that defense also determines how hard mobs hit you. Can anyone confirm it? If so, then it's good to get as much defense as you can in tanking.

It definitely helps your avoid, but it COULD help the other part, cause i THINK thats how it works with plate tanks (working for both avoid and damage intake).

Wow good question, I'm surprised Blanak doesnt know, he is my Monking Idol ATM. I can't wait to hear if anyone knows the definitive answer if it does both or just the avoidance.

Its the same as agility, im guessing.

Healers get to use the + defense skill, and it just adds to our base avoidance, I am guessing all classes in the game use it the same.

The amount a mob hits you for it factored with your mitigation (physical or magic type)

LOL, nah man I think its just for your avoid but I am not the type to talk shit about stuff I am not absolutely sure of. One of those EQ2 stat guys like Ishbu or Calagin probably knows better. But I guess you could just strip off your armor and throw on a bunch or +def stuff and see if you get hit harder with or without them if you really wanted to know.

I was not talking about the mitigated damage by our mitigation.

I was talking the raw damage from mobs. It's not a fixed number and it's spread in a range. For example, a mob may hit from 1k to 20k.

Someone believed that if you have higher defense, the hit will be more likely closer to lower end rather than higher end of the damage spread.

In other word, defense is a modifier of how hard mobs may hit you. I want to confirm if it is true.

hint: In eq2players, defense on gear is called mitigation. Also, in eq1, you can get aa with the same thing.

It's base avoid. Doesn't effect how hard you are hit.
