At any rate, the writers of star trek have made it clear that these weapons have become vastly obsolete. They offer no advantage that I can think of.. At least phasers are highly customizable and can interact with or penetrate energy shields (which seems to come standard). in addition by matching phasers to the shield frequency (or whatever crappy science they came up with) you can shoot through shields.

It has already been noted (thanks Vryx!)that ammunition manufacturers are centuries ahead of their time by creating rounds that are capable of defeating space-born enemies in a vacuum.
