Default Very Newbie question

Good day everyone.

I am trying to understand the idea behind "pets adept 3 or master". I have been playing EQ for years and have many top end toons including a 78 necro. I have really been enjoying the game alot and have been reading many differents between EQ1 and EQ2. In EQ1, the pet is used just for extra DPS. ie: snare, get agro, get more agro, send in the pet, run away, repeat and rinse as needed. However in EQ2, the pet sounds as if it is a tank to hold agro and to tank while you dot.

Thanks you for any help and suggestion that you might be able to give.

They try to eliminate many of the methods used in eq1 to "kite" mobs. That being said, there are still some classes that are able to kite, its just a little more work. You wont however hear about "quad kiting", "fear kiting" or "charm kiting" like they are able to do in eq1. Our snare is the darkness line and its pretty much garbage for the purposes of kiting.

Your pet is part of your sustained damage over time, its our closest version of autoattack I guess, its kind of a set it and forget it type of damage over time, at least in group and raid situations where your pet isnt actually tanking. The better quality your pet, the better your pet's dps will be. If you are in a situation where your pet is tanking, the better quality your pet is, the better it will hold aggro in addition to doing better dps.

Essentially, upgrade your pets no matter what, unless its a pet that you never plan on using =)

Djank, ty vm for your quick reply. So I guess I treat my pet as my personal tank/meat shield . I guess the next dumb question is how do you up grades your pets. In EQ 1, they have now gone with level 1 being vendor items, level 2 being drop from solo/groupable trash and level 3 from Raid mobs.

Thanks again for your help on this.

Well first off, if you are gonna be soloing and thus using your pet to tank for you you definitely want to upgrade it as anything less than ad3 wont hold aggro off you if you are casting much at all, the pets description will let you know if its a fighter (tank), mage (aoe dmg), or scout (single target dmg). There is actually a pretty good write up on the eq2players forum on the basics of pet types, aa paths and methods to upgrade your pets but the basics are :
app II - vendor bought (next to worthless)
app IV - player made from common harvests (not much better)
adept I - treasured drops from mobs (okay, will do in a pinch but upgrade quick)
adept III - player made from rare harvests (decent and fairly easy to get)
master I - Fabled drop from an exquisite chest (get em when you can)
master II - Class choices every 10 levels only certain spells available this way (choose wisely)

Djank,

Once again thank you for taking the time to explain this to me. I have found the most information on this forum and have now bookmark it as my reference point for question from within the game.

Thanks once again
