Lets compare those regarding only necro usefull stats, int excluded cos its softcapped mostly.
aramid robe: nice hitpoints/sta +2 crit mit, then 2 crit, 30 spelldmg, 4 disr.., and a nice dmg proc (anyone test that? id estimate it will be 75 of total dps)
Desert Prince: okay hitpoints, 3 crit, 25 spelldmg, and 5 cast speed (which some of u find less important cos "we cast already fast enough...")
smr: nice hitpoints/sta, 2 crit, 40 spelldmg, and a proc casting deathmarch...
so the only major difference here is the proc: a 75 dps dmg proc with some power to grp (since when is that important for dps) versus + 1crit & 5 spell haste versus a 100% spell haste proc (which guaranteed translates into more then 75 dps)
Casting bullshit spells when u have nothing else to cast will make them less bullshit and actually usefull, since each of them can proc a nice range of dmg procs on top of what little they already add.
Not sure about others but even when it procs i never run out of buttons to click, one more usefull then the other ofcourse.
And thrust me, i might not be able to put up numbers like some that are posted here on this forum, for the guild that i am in i can parse very necro worthy (even with the smr :P).
So i cant really understand why i am >dumb< for using it over those 2 other robes suggested here.
In all humbleness,

the problem with your logic is that you think the SMR robe actually translates into that much dps increase. The fact is the proc lasts for 2 maybe 3 spells, depending on when you cast it, when it actually procs and what you have in your rotation. Basing a rotation on a 'if' is not an efficient way to generate consistent dps.
Static haste increasers are always going to be greater than some procs based on spell rotations. Some say necros cast fast, well to be honest not really as fast as I believe the class should be at. But that has more to do with the base casting times and not haste items available. A +10 casting speed item like the VP robe will be better in long run situations than a probable proc.
You also have to look at where you sit with raid and group buffs. If you're in a raid with a monk and in a group with a troub, this robe means even less than it did before. Having a more consistent piece is of greater value is really why people have said that robe is not a viable option.
