Re: Charm breaks
at lvl 77 you're fighting a losing battle in CoM, end of story. you might be able to super-slowly collect the items from golems, but you'll die every 5mins for a net-gain of negative xp. you want to have > 480 Subjugation for your M1 charm to last consistently there for > 15mins. You can get away with about 470 with shaky ~10min results.
that said, charm is the most overpowered spell we have for soloing. with proper setup and practice it'll let you solo such things as all CoM, Fear, Upper Sebilis, Crypt of Agony -2 last guys, etc. without charm many of those would take you unbearably long or even not be possible (like the Frog in Fear).
as to specifically your question of best practices... well, there've been a few posts about somehow getting a hook into ACT voice-alert for when charm breaks - that'd be ideal, but no replies for whether it's possible.
generally speaking, if you're doing anything of interest, you'll be charming mobs that 2 shot you. you don't need to target thru your charmed pet - normal targetting has just as good a chance of saving your ass on a break, in theory:
1. taunt the mob you're killing
2. tab to pet break -> stun -> root -> fear -> re-charm -> r-click cancel fear -> r-click cancel root. fear is important in case your pet decides to range-attack you even being mostly melee. you'll almost always going to eat 1 melee round from melee break pet - the difference for live & die is whether you can lock it down before 2nd round. nothing worse than pet finishing you off from root with a ranged, so don't forget to fear.
the more you charm-solo the more successful you'll become at pulling this off, but there are way too many factors that can and will go wrong. FD is almost always a better default "fuk fuk fuk" option, except probably in Sebilis. if pet not going to 2-shot you, the above is fairly fail-safe.
there are the obvious ways to increase your chances of survival:
1. keep your max distance at all times (gives you max reaction time for break)
2. chose caster pets if have the option (it's easier to resist spells and no 3^ i've seen can 2 shot me with spells)
3. max out stun casting-time improvement for solo spec
4. max out root resist & duration for solo spec
5. max out fear resist for solo spec
not so obvious:
1. shrink your pets (when charm breaks, it grows back to normal size, making it wasier to spot)
2. don't use your taunt and AE knockback unnecessarily - you want to have them available at all times. if your taunt is down when charm breaks, knockback sometimes can save you if you're fast enough to adjust.
hit 80. research and obtain all the +Subj gear. pick ridiculously hard challenges. enjoy the solo power.
