I played eq1 since launch and eq2 since launch as a necro...so um..yeah...moving on..
The Necro in EQ1, when of a high level, can stand outside the gates of an enemy city, idlely chatting away while his pet takes care of the guards. EQ1 Necro was bad ass, and Fear actually stuck, making fear kiting a viable way to level. Also, as time went on, mobs hit harder. So eventually, like in LDoN and GoD, yes, a necro pet was worthless cuz they were gimped to shit. However, from PoP and before, my necro in EQ1 kicked ass.
EQ2 Necro however, is a shadow of its former self. Fear breaks, snare is worthless except when running away, and the pets are weak. When leveling a necro solo, your pet will do about 1/3 the damage you do. Go down the Sta line aa's to get the knockdown/stun, max out the taunt, its a 100% rescue when its only you and your pet on the hate list when maxed out.
You also need to be smart about the mobs you fight. You cant take on 3 or 4 mobs if your gear and spells suck. Park your pet in a safe spot and pull yourself. Or in some zones, you can send your pet in, have him whack the mob and use the call pet ability to bring him right to you and the mob to you also without pulling adds along the way.
Anyways, point is, your pet is your partner. Even though you control both, work as team with it. root the mobs, call pet off, fear it. w/e you gotta do to keep your pet alive while killing the mob.
A necro enjoys inflicting pain and agony on their enemies, so they take their time. Soloing as a necro is NOT quick. It is a slow, painful, and time consuming process. However, we are the best
