How does /report really work?

I was just having a conversation a few days ago about this little command, since someone from my guild was threatened by /tell. We were not quite sure how this command really works. I'm sure it is written somewhere, but maybe someone can give me an answer here. Personally, I have never used this feature before, but I guess it's worth knowing

- Does /report record the last few lines that were written in your log
or
- does /report record the next few lines that are written in your log?

And how do you get the logged stuff into a petition?

Pretty sure /report logs the last 5 or 6 lines from a certain player. And you should /petition right after a report and the GMs will check the "report buffer" for your character and look what was said during that period.

It does logs the last few lines (20 iirc) in all chat windows, including /emote, /guild /say etc..

Also type /report Ardain for example, then mention that in the petition so that the CSR or GM finds it easier, if they don't do what Pinksi said.

From how it was explained to me, and my understanding of it:
Report pulls those lines from chat and saves them serverside. They hang around for a decent amount of time. This means if you remember who/when you reported, you can refer to that in a later petition.

He did not clarify that if you report the same person twice, if a new one wipes the old - I am assuming they're date stamped and multiple reports vs. one person will not be a wash. I could be wrong, though.
