Re: starting up, solo class questions...
A few questions you should ask yourself.
1.) Are you looking to ever hit end game content and raid?
2.) Do you plan to group, solo or duo with your friend most often? (also, would you stick with the game if your friend quits, which may leave you with less options)
Even with your friend playing a Swash, one of the better group dps classes is a Brig. They are also well known as good pvp.
My main is a Shadowknight and although I am in a raiding guild and have decent gear to compare to other classes, I do not think we are the best choice in a pvp server if your goal is to pvp.
As for Warlocks, can't really say much.

Re: starting up, solo class questions...
Well, if your friend is going to be a swashy and you are going to pvp then you'll kinda have to be a warlock, swashies are forced good, and sks are forced evil so that really limits your choice on that one.
As for the solo question you can make it far but grouping is typically more viable for speed reasons. You can def make the first 30 levels solo quickly, but after that grouping is a bit faster.
From what i hear of pvp (i don't play it) healers can be decent, so if you plan to duo with your fried look into the fury class, decent heals and some decent dmg too, would need a pvp'er to confirm that tho, i'm just speculating from what i know of the class

Re: starting up, solo class questions...
monk, end of story
by the end of eof i was within a few % of soloing the kaladim gloves ring event with medocre gear for the time, and had the rest of the zone save the queen on lockdown when i wanted to.
if you plan on burning large swathes of mobs down though i would roll a paladin. i found that when fighting large amounts of mobs, at base line ability (as in no APs) paladins have always been better at this, and always will be. the main thing that makes monks so good at soloing is their ancient teachings ability tsunami, combined with crane flock (100% aoe auto attack + double attack) and eagle shriek (under 30% hp gives +75% to melee crits +large chunk of mit), and their high haste. however, in solo content and PVP, the ability to deal devastating spike dps is king over all, espescially for a class with as high an ability to keep an enemy stun locked as ours (so they cant run away)
