Default Sound Issue

Ok question, i just got through installing a new hard drive when mine shit and dropping it off at my campus computer techs for them to load my backed up files. I got my comp all setup, but for some reason i don't have any sound. when i go to the volume program in accessories i get the error message saying " There are no active mixers for the device available, to install mixers go to control panel........"and leads me to add hardware. Ive followed the directions which included uninstalling and installing Sigmatel High Definition Audio CODEC, which is the only hardware with an error symbol on it. However that did nothing. So im kinda lost and frustrated on what to do. ive looked for updates on drivers and such found nothing. I use Windows XP. If any other information is needed fire away ill give you everything i know.

Default Re: Sound Issue

I've run into a couple of issues like that over the past few years.

Had an Asus board...onboard sound. Got the sound drivers from the appropriate section on the Asus site...no joy. Apparently, Asus did a rev 2...with a different sound chip...and didn't change the info on their support site. Further, Windows Update later had an "update" to the drivers....well that pooched it again....wrong version.

ALI sound chips...like the ALi 650 etc...have an issue where sometimes you have to get older revisions of the drivers to work on them. Had a SOYO board refuse to work until I ran drivers 4 revs back.

Best way for onboard sound is to look for the sound chip on the motherboard, and google that string printed on it. Check your manual or look for about a half-inch square chip towards the backplane connector side of the board.

Thanks for the info, went to dell.com and found a new driver update solved the problem.
