Hey guys,
I'm looking for an answer to a very simple question: Why play Everquest? I have played Eq1 and 2 since the BETA release of each, and have a strong grasp of the mechanics of the game. However, I quit sometime in the middle of TSO.
As a player who has (or at least had) a strong grasp of the mechanics of the game, but has missed so much since the last expansion, should I return? If I return I will be starting new, and will probably be doing a lot of solo'ing and short grouping until I feel I am well geared enough to raid. Will I find an Everquest I am familiar with and will enjoy? Or will I find a game that is but a ghost of it's old, wonderful self?
I'm looking for things like:
What's the population like?
How's the new content?
How's the revamped old content?
How's the class balance?
How's the progression for groups, raids, and solo'ers?
And anything else that might spring to mind. Before you ask, I don't have a rig that can play EQ2 anymore, but am getting one. Hence why I didn't just hop onto the games free content (? Why the fuck did they do this?) and check it out.
Thanks for your time,

I no longer play, but if I were to come back, the things I like are the way combat works, the "feel" of how you control your character, (I was very comfortable with the EQ2 system, and learning a new game can take some getting used to, so there is some appeal to return from the comfort perspective).
The population is extremely low compared to how it used to be 2-3 years ago however.
Class balance is not balanced, but I think that Xelgad is trying to get it right and is making steps in the right direction, so little by little it's getting better.
Progression is terrible, from the standpoint that you can raid the lowest level raids from Tier 9, and then as you upgrade you gain very little. EQ2 USED to have a much better progression and the actual gains from new gear are comparatively much less than it used to be. This might appeal to the casual player, in that even doing heroic zones and a handful of easy raids can get you geared out fairly well, in comparison to higher-end raiders, however to high end raiders it kinda blows.
I play EverQuest for the people. The mechanics are horrible, the raids suck, but the people are awesome.
Unfortunately, many of my "EQ2 Peeps" have left the game as well due to what we will call "Unreconcilable Differences."
I hear ya there Crabbok, I yearn for the *reset EQ2 back to Pre-EOF* days. LOL
Why do I play?
Simple answer: I still have fun with it.
Longer answer: I don't do the "Ugh, gotta log on and do ABC". When you start to get the mentality that you "have" to do something, in game, you are paying SOE to work.
Hobbies are meant to relax you. This game is a hobby. If it doesn't relax you, why do you bother playing it?
Because it's amusing.

Because all other MMOs I tried are less fun, for me.
