Default Wailing Cave strats for free and new players

Wailing Caves is a very fun zone and one of the most popular for old and new players alike.

You need to be between level 12 and 20 to run this zone.

Warning; This zone is not like most of the other lower dungeons as the lower you go you will need a good group. Even mentoring down high level toons can be a challenge and that is why I think a lot still use this zone for that challenge.

I talked to one long-time raider I found in the caves once and he said it is because of the challenge he keeps mentoring down to come here. He said the mentoring system has kept him entertained waiting for the next expansion so I am glad he found fun things to do over the last few months.

I dual-boxed this zone with a 90SK mentored down with a 16 Templar. Although my 90 SK is a lot stronger then a 16 SK being mentored down it is still a blast and gives a lot of challenge especially the final ring raid event.

Also, what I have done which adds a lot to the realism is when I find a piece of plate armor in a chest I equip it replacing my mentored down 90 legendary stuff. I think mentored items lose a lot of power and health and getting the level appropriate stuff as you go through the zone gives you more power and health which you will need in the ring event. Same thing with Adept spells or if your luckey a Master spell. It seems a natural level item is more powerful than a mentored down one. You could also, if you have a mentored toon, go on the broker and find a lot of 12-20 adepts and armor before you come to the dungeon. I personally like finding it as I go and I am thinking having everything level appropriate would make you to OPed.

On teh way to the wailing caves I always kill Reettusk the elephant. He is a little South west of the caves near the river and you can find him walking around a circular path. He used to run very fast in the past but they nerfed him to walking to make him easier to target. He is a easy kill. Next head towards the Caves and you will pass throught the skeltal orcs-find the named one named Galwar or something like that. He is very easy. Be carfeul you only grab a few though because they stun/interrupt/stifle a hell of a lot and my templer when going to the caves couldn't get any heals off and died. Very easy to sneak to caves if you take your time.

As soon as you enter there is a gnome who gives a quest to kill 30 orcs and you get a club quest reward. I advise doing this as I got this right away for my templar and I noticed hos auto-attacks increased quite a bit so a good piece of equipemnt to acquire and easy to do quest. As you head down the ramp you run into bats and spiders and orcs. None of these should be any problems as long as you don't try to pull too many.

Go into next room and there is always a shiney on the ground along with some globs and spiders and a few orcs. Be careful with AOE in this room because the blobs are heroic and so are the two orcs by the exit to the next tunnel.

Go in next tunnel and on left there is another tunnel which leads to a chamber with a ton of skeletal orcs-I always use this to complete the quest as there are about 15 of them. Just pull a few at a time and you should be ok as they are easy. A tunnel leading of of these has a ton of spiders in it. I watched the raider I mentioned earlier run through this tunnel and pull all the spiders at once, about 20 of them, and burn them down while only losing about 1/2 health. So unless your uber raid geard just pull the sets of two and work your way down until you come to either a Named called 'Soulspike" or two place holders. I found the two placehiolders harder than the named as they attack you from either side of you and the named while it has more hitpoints is easy to target. Using your tab key can help keep hate if your the tank if your doing the placeholders to cycle between them. If just the place holders kill them and then you can come back later to see if named is up.

Next go back to first tunnel and go into a room with a campfire and 3 orcs around it. This is a ring event whcih will spawn Gareg Stonecrusher a named orc boss. Be careful when doing this ring as ghostly bats continuosly circle the cave and there are skeletal orcs hidden behind the stalactmites. A lot of time in EQ2 a mobs name will give you a hint about its attacks and abilities. I looked at "Stonecrusher" and figured he hits with a lot of crushing damage so equipped a chest piece that had +5 Crushing. I have tried him without that piece equipped and I definetly take more damage without it. Either way he was pretty easy to kill though but if you like all the ins and outs of named mobs its fun to counter his crushing damage.

From here you can go either right, which takes you to some strongbox mobs that look like chests or go left to the Pit of Death. The strongbox mobs are heroic and have a large aggro radius and I have never gotten any good drops off of them so I avoid this area now. But if you are a good full equipped group it is good xp since they are heroic.

At the Pit Of Death you see down to a bunch of skeletal orcs at the bottom. Do not jump! Even if you have feather fall because you will see if you go down to the bottom it is littered with spikes sticking straight up. There is a named that spawns here if you kill all the orcs a Drudh'rek Orc. He is a very rare spawn as I have only seen him up twice in about 50 runs.

Back at the top of the pit is anotehr tunnel leading to the habited part with real orcs. Starting here is where you need a decent group and hopefully you have picked up a piece or two of level appropriate gear and spells. You can go back and check if Soulspike has spawned if your needing equipment but you will have to fight all those spiders so I don't

Now you enter a tunnel with a TRAP! If you wait long enough you will see spikes shoot up through the ground. I have found out that if you target the orcs on the far side and bring them to you it triggers the trap and then you can run to the far side safely. Other then that it will always catch you and does a lot of piercing damage. I haven't tried using +piercing armor as I always just pull the far orcs with my bow and run across.

Now you are in a long, descending tunnel with quite a few orcs and a lot of shineys. The shineys here are unique as they are beettles you won't find anywhere else so it is worth farming these and they go for quite a few gold on the broker.

At teh bottom of this ramp you have three directions you can go-straight ahead, left or right. I always go left to a door and behind it is a named weaponsmith. There are a ton of orcs in this room and it is impossible to body pull just a few of them so get ready for a big fight. Make sure you pull them all out into the corridor as some of the orcs are scout types and their backstabs do a lot of damage and they target healers. I get a master chest from this guy about 50% of the time.

Back to the other two ways you can go I always go throught the door as the other way has no nameds and a lot more strongboxes who I never seem to have a lot of luck with. Some mobs are easier than others and I find strongboxes always give me the hardest fights.

Through the door is about 10 orcs and they are all heroics. Be careful and body pull back out into the cave only two at a time or they will overwhlem you. I spent about 5 times learning this pull and once you do the room isn't hard to clear if you take your time. Now you have two doors to choose from. Here I always go through the door straight ahead as it leads to the jail area and two more nameds. I forgot to mention out in the commonlands a little South of the caves is a nomad camp with a guy who will give you a quest to rescue his wife who is locked up in this jail. Get the quest before you come in here. Now there are a ton of orcs in teh next few rooms and wolves that are heroic. I get disease on me everytime I fight these wolves so my templar cure I have on a macro to spam cures or I find I can't hit for any type of damage from being to weak I think.

After you go up the steps take first door on left and a named is in here the butcher. There are 4 orcs in room right before him so don't use AOE's or they will aggro him also. He is a decent fight but not too hard and I haven't noticed any special attacks with him. No go back to jail area and kill orcs and the jailer named. You find the nomads wife in cell except she doesn't want to leave-stockholm syndrome or something-so just click on her and you have to go back to the nomad guy without her and tell him she likes Orc jails more than him-but quest updates and you get reward and xp.

go Back to room that you had to pull slowly and go through other door. Now you come up to the biggest named so far an Advisor guy with a bunch of friends and a lot of idols along the wall. Don't ignore the idols as they will shoot lightning at you for the whole fight. The trick here is to pull the advisor back to the steps and fight him there so he can't send the bolts from teh statues. You have to be on top of targeting him as the other orcs are all fighters and they keep pulling aggro to them away from him and you spend all your time fighting them while his biog attacks hit you. If aggro shifts off him just hit <shift> <tab> and it goes back to him and burn him down fast and you should be fine.

Once he is dead the idols stop shooting lightning bolts and a door opens behind the throne.

Go behind throne and down corridor until you come to a big square ofcorridors that go around two rooms.

Important: In one of these rooms is a caster named with a key you must have later so kill this mob to get the key.

The first door you open is a room with a raid leader and about 8 otehr orcs. These are also like the Advisors buddies in that they pull aggro of their boss and let him beat you down while you aren't targeting. Just make sure you target him and burn him down first then the other guys are all easy. No make sure you regen everything and get ready for next room. As soon as you go in you fight three casters and the named is very, very hard. He has huge nukes so I always make sure I have my stuns and kicks up so I can keep him from getting them off. He has one nuke that is not stopped by a templars reactive heals so you have to be fast with the normal heals. I spend all fight on this one with just my SK doing dmage as I need all my Templars power for heals. This is a long fight but should be no problem if you keep the heals up and the stuns on the named. Make sure you get the key.

:Leave here and go down untlil you see spirits hovering over a pond with a bridge. Look up and you will see a named Spiritkeeper. This guy stuns you alot but I found if you keep autoattack on him from your tank he keeps the tank just stunned over and over and doesn't do any damage to anyojne else so the other toons can burn him down. If you turn off auto attack it doesn't keep the mob focused on the tank and he stays stunned while the mob goes for your casters. Just keep on autoattack and you will be fine.

After here you come to the raid event with the Big Boss. You must have the key from the caster named from earlier.

Go in and talk to Lord Ree. This is a 3 wave ring event raid type encounter. The first wave after you talk to Ree is a bunch of void things hanging around the edges. I have found melee damage hits them better than spells so if you are scout heavy in your group it will be much easier. try not to burn down too much power as you still have two rings to go.

After them comes Ghi'Zard the Worgmaster who is hard as he comes with quite a few friends. You must kill the Worgs first or this guy will regen health over and over again. If you burn down all his friends and then work on him he is much easier. Problem now is you have Lord Ree awaken and you are probably low on power. To make it much easier I would have a power regen toon in your group if all possible-or if you have a summoner give out power regen items at the minimum. Lord Ree is a zerker so he has a lot of AOE and bezerk type spells. I use stun alot when I see him trying to go bezerk and that helps make this fight a ton easier. If you aren't too low on power you should last him out and just keep stunning him when you see him trying to go bezerk. It took me about 15 times to finally kill him after I learned what potions to bring-but the key early on was feign death and the thing a cleric gives you to rez them. Feign Death after second ring event and rez your healer and wait an get back a little power-but don't wait too long as the whole ring event will recharge and you will have to do it all over again.

As I dual-box I have my computer on extreme high performance and the first two fights it wouldn't show any animations of him casting and I died. After I tried it on balanced performance I can see him casting so your settings should be at least on balanced-at least the person who is going to be the one stunning him so you can see when he casts.

He drops good loot-a good chance at masters and legendary items-he drops the echoing pain line of armor which is really good at this level so it is good to run this every 12 hours when the lockout expires to equip your toons with good legendary gear.

At this point I usually run back to see if Soulspike is up but you have to fight your way back because everything has spawned. I learned that if you evac you go back to the entrance and it is a much shorter distance so hope you have a class with evac with you.

Wailing caves, Like Stormhold, has a lot more secret things that I won't go into as the discovery is very fun and there might even be things I haven';t learned yet even after 50+runs.

I made this one a little more in depth from my Stormhold guide as people in genenral seemed to like it and some of the comments they let me know a few things I missed. I don't want to be a complete walkthourgh for you guys as that would be spoiling it too much but I want to let you know all the cool things so maybe more people will run it if they know how fun it is and we caqn find groups more easily.

I will work on fallen Gate soon as I am running it quite a few more times so I can give a quality strat guide that people can use. I am putting in Noob section since last one made a person mad I put it in general.

Have fun and let me know if it helps you. I like writing these while I craft since the forge no longer kills you when you miss a counter and if it helps people enjoy the game better then every one wins.

    Have fun everyone.

Lol - LFG told him to post here so I doubt he will ban him.

Also to OP: posting this in the official forums would better reach your target audience. Most players here on Eq2flames are casual at worst and hardcore raiders at best. Noone cares about 4-5 year old content, especially at such low levels anymore.

Oh great agnar, i have a question for you. When u kill Lord Ree and go through the door on the left there is a clicky on the hindge of the door. What is that? I used to solo this zone with my monk but just never knew what that clicky did. Someone in my old guild also said there used to be a part past Lord Ree. this was like when the game came out though.
