The idea of a password works very well. I did something similar to that a while back for the same reasons. There are a lot of level 80 idiots. Just group with people, and if you think they are halfway decent, tell them the info for the channel. Then when you / they are looking for groups/raids later, anyone in that channel knows that the rest of the people in the channel aren't complete morons.
