Diablo 1 was mediocre at best, even at the time. Diablo 2 is essentially everything done right.

The curse of a game like this is that they can't actually release any information which would clue people in about how good it is, because if you have the numbers before the game comes out, there's no point in playing. So all they can do is show footage, and not detailed numbers.

You're delusional, D1 was probably my favorite game all-time. It won just about every critics yearly best award.

EDIT:

I recall skipping high school for a week because of Diablo 1, it got to the point where my parents took my modem so I would stop playing. Battle.net, and online gaming in general was a new concept when Diablo 1 launched. That's what made D1 even more revolutionary than D2.

Diablo 1 lacked the backend that we'd come to expect with games like Nethack and Angband. It was entirely too simplistic, and the difficulty levels offered didn't allow for much replay value.

Diablo 2 upped the item count (and added socketing to have even more variables), fixed a lot of the pathing and spawn issues, had multiple hubs, increased the unique monster count substantially, added AI party members and summons, and implemented damage shields that didn't suck. On top of that, Hardcore Hell is the most fun experience this side of killing a hooker with her own stiletto heels.
