Yes, it's all Splash Damage's own work. They had no help from id, nope, none at all.

And the fact that people still play Quake III says more about it than any opinion you may have about it's quality.

id has been bit quiet for the past years, since they only have released 2 in-house titles in 9 years, + 2 expansions. But that doesn't make them bad games, i guess D3 was disappointment for some, for me it wasn't but Q3 is still one of the better online shooters + after 12 years Q1 is still holding decent player base, and for a good reason.

And you have to remember that id is the most revolutionary game studio in FPS genre. Those who are about to say it's Valve and HL, i hope you remember that HL uses Quake 2 engine.

You could say Epic, since they made the first really useful consistent engine. Id says "Hey, let's reinvent the wheel. Surely an entirely new API means the engine is a lot better!"
