the only "unproven" thing in AoC is the "arcade-style" combat.
the other unique features are mostly (heavy) updates on stuff that worked well in AO.
the lag/fps thing has been an issue in every MMO ever in development i think... EQ2 is 3 years old and still has these problems, tabula rasa is a lot less ambitious than AoC and still has these problems...
they are planning a "fog of war" system for the major battles that will basically adjust on the fly and only show you the nearest combatants or somesuch. no idea if it'll work...
but multi-player sieges have been around for a long time so it's just a matter of making it work with this particular graphics engine and network setup.
If I AoC fails, i doubt it will be due to performance issues, i think they learned their lesson from launching AO buggy. If it fails, I think it will either be the combat system or something pvp-related.
Ultimately, if 200 people on the screen isn't viable, they always have the option of making it 100.
Also remember that hype is hype, none of this siege FPS stuff has any effect on PvE which is the majority of people's playtime - at least for the first few months. The raids are still 24 player, the groups are still 6 people ( i think 6).
as far as the M rating, it was there from the start. tbh, I'm a little surpised to see boobs, i thought the rating was more of a publicity stunt, but looks like they are totally embracing it. i don't think it matters since everyone that wants to play it willl still play it. M rating never stopped GTA from being the biggest game in the world.
