Lol I was going to make a response about the stupidity of calling something not released yet "3rd gen" and how I wouldn't mind another game similar to, but not exactly like EQ1, but after reading that last sentence I realized I didn't have to.

I've read his essay on instancing and while his sentences here and there are quite wordy, I understood it fine. I don't see how it would be hard for anyone with a high school diploma to read and understand...but whatever.

I still don't understand. You neglected my question, What progress that has happened in the last 10 years will not be in vanguard?
Please don't say Instancing, seriously If I wanted to play a console game, I would. but feel free to mention anything else and enlighten me.

If Taking the best idea's from previous games and improving on them doesn't make something 3rd Gen, what does?

All new game mechanics are just improved versions of old ones. there is only so much you can do for a Game, unless you figured out a way to make us all lawnmower men so we can interact with the games with direct links to our minds???

all that said I am sure AoC will be 3rd Gen to, it just may expand on different ideas. maybe it will better utilize instancing then EQ2's cut n paste hack job on everything.

SWG didn't fail miserably because people didn't want it, it failed miserably because SoE instead of balancing the couple classes that were so overpowered (or just balance the fucking mind pool damage) decided to change the whole fucking game.

SWG at it's peak destroyed EQ2 for subs...and would have gone up had a couple mistakes not been make:

-- Jedi and the use of fucking holocrons
-- Mind damage being able to not be healed correctly (hence giving Rifles and Combat Medics a huge advantage....)
-- Not implementing real Star Wars storylines and characters in the game until it was too late.

the point of the game the way it was made, was to allow people to live in the star wars universe. it succeeded very well at that. I've never seen a better re-creation of a fictional world in video game.

however, it turned out that most people didn't want to live in the star wars universe, they wanted to live in the star wars movie. And the game wasn't the movie. Personally meeting Thrawn and Jabba and doing a couple of missions for them was enough of a thrill for my SW fanboi side, but i guess not for most.

/derail off.

AoC gonna rock! ( i hope ) /cheercheer

...but the point was, in the beginning of the game that stuff wasn't around. It was put in after the fact to placate people. From what I understand SoE in the beginning only had a limited license to use Lucas Arts trademarks....

Maybe we are agreeing just with different opinions :P

I loved SWG, and if the clusterfuck that was LU9 (the jedi holocron mess) didn't happen, I think the game would still be fucking owning it up.

hrmm.. i only played SWG at launch, for about 2 months, Im pretty sure the "theme parks" existed right off the bat. Jedi were a mistake. Or setting the game in a time when they werent supposed to exist was. but thats neither here nor there. (I also tried the trial of whatever game is called SWG now. I dont know exactly what it is. It was fun, but it was EQ2 in a different setting... its like they squeezed it, waited until every ounce of originality was drained from it and then let it go...)

http://community.ageofconan.com

closed beta sign-up is live now.

This game looks very very good right now. It might not be for everyone, but I think it will make a much bigger splash than people expect when it launches, the DEVs are not over-promising anything and seem to have very solid and achievable goals for what they want to launch with as well as a very down-to-earth and constructive relationship with the fan community.

Watch videos on the official site if you've never heard of this.

cheers.
