you mean spec for healing and try to out heal healers?.. no that would be a large waste of time as you can do that without specing for healing.

these specs don't hinder you from doing that so much as enhance your abilities to do your real job which is tanking. unfortunately there is no room in a group for a tank that can't do just that.

I guess I'll suck it up and just go into the front lines.
I guess the responsibility just feels too heavy right now. I appreciate your opinion.

Now, I see that the general idea here is that you're a main tank, or some type of tank. So I guess these specs are made for offensive or defensive tanks.
Can a Paladin fill a DPS / Utility role in a group instead of tanking?
My guild here is saying "No, you can only tank, that's all you can do, that's all you're good for".
Are they a bunch of schlubs, or is there a good DPS-Utility spec out there?
Mind you, I'm new to EQ2- I came from a few other MMOs.
    I am just a Lv30 Pally at the moment~
Yeah, you wont be pulling your weight in a group if you're not the tank.
You can heal, but not as well as a healer.
You can DPS, but not as well as a DPS class.
If you're looking to group and be an asset to the group, you have to be the tank.

I guess I'll suck it up and just go into the front lines.

Yep, when you first start tanking it seems like a lot of pressure.
If someone dies, it's usually your fault. If it's not, people will think it is.

... but after tanking for a while, you learn how to do everything and get used to it.

Even tho the responsibility seems like a weight now, since you're just starting out.... it's actually the number one reason to play a tank.

If you play a DPS class, you're just there on the sidelines casting on whatever mobs are put in front of you. You have very little control over the grouping/raiding experience.

A good DPS class cannot make up for a shitty tank. A good tank makes any group successful.

Imo Divine Aura is a beast for some fights and definetly worth having in tank spec... Such as toxx and roehn... Makes you basicly unkillable while moving mobs around and the chance of getting out of range of healers is there

to get divine aura you would have to drop either the wisdom endline.. unacceptable.. or the more obvious choice reflect... which is completely unacceptable.. yes you get more hp yes divine aura is a beast defensive ability but unfortunately none of that compares with the wis endline group buff or especially reflect which acts very similar to reduce damage incoming to you while also being one of your highest parsing abilities.. i see no room for divine aura

EDIT : OBVIOUSLY I CHANGED MY MIND SORT OF! :P

major changes to my full defensive spec...

i got rid of crusaders faith the extra points in recovery speed and unfortunately some points into group potency from the sf portion of the wis endline... took 3 points out of pally tree making it 3 into intercept 3 into ward reuse and 3 into lay on hands reuse instead of 3,4,5

basically.. this trades off.. meh recovery speed, 4.75 potency to the group, and meh crusaders faith for 5% more hp.. which.. with these hm mobs aes.. helps a ton.. and you get divine aura.. which is > crusaders faith any day... oh.. and you get to keep reflect wis endline and str endline.. so yeah..

i'm keeping my dps tree the same.. thats the tree i stay with 99% of the time .. and there doesn't seem to be much use in changing the tank tree since increasing the heals is only a minor part of that

With regards to the tanking spec, isn't DA functionally useless in any case? The only reason to ever spec in it that I can think of is if you plan on tanking instances for a lot of PUGs and want a trick to buy yourself some time for slack healers.

So how about a spec that looks like this instead?

    STR 10/10/2/1
    STA 4/4/10
    WIS 4/8/10/1/8
    INT 4/10/8/1

That would put you at 99/100 for the Crusader tree. Overall I think the group potency increase would be more important than buffing your crit, which isn't difficult to raise with gear and buffs and you still get the 5% health increase.

DA may be useless as a damage spike prevention, but its useful as a damage reduction tool; it WILL reduce incoming damage but it WILL NOT stop it completely... and for 2 points it makes a nice temp buff.

Group potency may be nice, but for a pretty minor potency hit you get a temp buff which stops you dieing

As posted several times in this thread however.. no-one really uses their defensive spec anyways... I've used mine a total of ONCE since I got the gear to spec away from crits... that was on learning Toxx where I just had to survive long enough with my group in order before Vulaan was dead. and in that fight no-one in my group cared what their DPS was at :P
