First post, woot. I am all for things that diminish level locking and twinking, so at first glance at the new pvp changes I almost rushed to the store to buy the new expansion. However, has the need to turn off combat xp to maximize AA's, thereby turning leveling into a brutal, tedious crawl been dealt with significantly? I would imagine that a majority of players could still put themselves through this agony just to "teh pwn" others, even while level locking is irrelevant. EQ2 pvp AND pve is great, but I am not sure I could take the no combat xp grind which if my darkest fears are true, could now be expanded further past the old twinking tiers.

No one has to turn off their XP in order to have a high amount of AAs before hitting 80.

You just won't have them at level 15.

But will I get raped the shit out of trying to defend myself for the months it takes to get there because I lack AA's and the rest of the population is maxed out with em? I mean, I dont expect everyone to not be hardcore AA grinders, but it would be nice if the majority was more casual about leveling so I wouldnt be rejected from mid level pug's and stuff for being weak.

The "i need to lock to get AAs" idea is a myth.

I started from 1 on Nagafen a month ago. I'm 60 now, with 75 AA. I played normally and never locked.

If you just play normally, level on quests rather than straight grind, look for opportunity to kill solo named along the way, you will never have a problem with AA.

And BTW, that AA includes zero raid mobs or even group encounters - it's all solo and duo.

No you won't, there is hardly any lower tier pvp anymore. In 3.5 hours last night I got 3 kills in Butcherblock, 2 of which were bots. Keep in mind this is a high traffic zone for both FPs coming from Timorous Deep and all the Qs who want to do great questing from 20 - 30.

Combat experience gain is very quick from level 1 to about 25-30. Then it slows down significantly.

This means your AA will be relatively low until 25ish. Then things slow down, your quest : combat xp ratio goes up, and your AA begins to catch up til it finally surpasses your character level.

Honestly, alot depends on what class you want to play. Some classes are much easier -- and dare I say. more fun -- with some early AA under their belt (SKs being a good example). Some classes are better just to level as opposed to AA (Enchanters for instance).

An easy solution is to get to Timorous Deep (very easy to do on any character, Q or FP), get to 10, lock XP, and do all the quests in TD. Locked, you will finish almost every quest in the zone around level 18 and have 16 or 17 AA. Plus you'll have some very good, competitive gear. That's an excellent start for anyone who doesn't want to spend weeks grinding out AA, or anyone who doesn't have a high level friend to kill high level mobs in order to powerlevel your AA.

Once TD is complete, unlock and head out to your next zone of choice. I'd recommend Butcher Block, there's some ganking there for sure, but the zone is tightly designed in terms of questing and is pretty damn cool to boot. There's Nektulos Forest and Thundering Steppes too, Thundering being pretty cool and Nektulos being relatively boring.

You will ALWAYS get ganked, in any zone, and it might seem tough. It may be frustrating at first, but it after this last patch, it doesn't *stay* frustrating. New players finally have a change to get their feet under themselves right out the gate.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong. Yesterday and the day before I had many great fights at T2 & T3. CL, Antonica & DLW were the hotspots for most of the day.

I found the Level 10-19 chat most entertaining. I would watch it while reading the SOE forums and it reminded me of playing Dark Side of Moon while watch The Wizard of Oz. You had people on the forums claiming that they'd never killed a single newb and that all 1000 of their kills at level 17 came exclusively from all the "fun and fair PvP" that was being ruined. Meanwhile in the 10-19 chat, twinks were sharing tips on how to get around the new exp gain and still one shot noobs.
