Would not recommend illusionist for solo PvP, unless you are really up for a challenge and don't mind dying a lot (and I mean A LOT). You will often die extremely fast, and have little or no chance of getting away when outnumbered. Yes, if all goes well, you can completely disable your opponent until you kill him/her (that's why people hate chanters). Spells resists are pretty bad, however - so you can't really rely on your spells actually landing, even with all kinds of AA enhancements. That part is based on luck, and decides whether you will have a chance or just die in 2 seconds.
(There are also god abilities available that give full immunity to just about everything a chanter can do, and of course people use them.)
In conclusion: If you get easily frustrated, avoid chanter classes (and summoners).
