Well, summoners are GREAT in PVE but they're hard to play as when it comes to PVP. It is possible to get high titles as a summoner and be good at them but it can be frustrating at times I think. I can't really answer on how the conjurer is like but they do share the common problem of low survivability thanks to being cloth wearers that doesn't have much mitigation against melee classes.
In any case, I think going the stamina line is a good idea if your friend is going to become a summoner, having a tank pet taunting and keeping your pvp target away from yourself will help alot. It's what necros do at least so I think the same applies to conj.
As Milambers said, join a PVP server and Nagafen is HIGHLY recommended because the other PVP servers doesn't have that much PVP from what I've heard.
