My complaints from my 2 years on Nagafen had nothing to do with the population. Nagafen was always healthy in that regard. I just absolutely don't agree with the way the devs implemented PvP...
The token system encourages gross zerg farming, not tactical or interesting PvP.
The old fame system
should have been just a meaningless title, but for far too many people they wrapped up too much of their self worth in that title and took actions to protect it that were not conducive to enjoyable PvP as a whole. The new fame system is just as much of a farce.
The netcode for the game was so horribly broken that raid PvP was never viable or fun. You couldn't enjoy the intricacies of your character when you had 4-15 second lag on everything. It was a mindless zerg.
Engagement rules and resists were (are?) so broken that a small number of smart level 50's can take down an entire raid guild's chances of succeeding on a contested fight. That's not realistic in scope or intention.
They never implemented the most popular form of MMO PvP: battlegrounds (or for the WAR fans: "scenarios"). This could have been a million times more fun and accessible for the EQ2 playerbase. Queue'd 12v12 matches, with either deathmatch scoring or objective based scenarios, could be implemented across every server, both blue and red alike. I had a fucking
blast in WAR's scenarios. EQ2 already has the PvP class & spell balance and mechanics in place to make this work, it just has a horrible ruleset when it comes to the actual "feel" of open world PvP.
EQ2 does a lot of things well, but PvP is in no way one of them. This can still change. But like I said, I have zero desire to go back to Nagafen... it has nothing to offer me.
