Judging from what Calaglin just posted, I wouldn't be surprised if the obsidian came from a subquest of some sort rather than a drop or harvest. Its polished, so its either been polished naturally (usually through some sort of wind or sand erosion) or by a person, which is why I think it might be a subquest. I know for the Illusionist epic, there were a couple of updates that didn't have feathers of the NPC's head, and you had no indication the person was for the quest unless you decided to hail and got some sort of response, or the NPC spoke to you as you walked near.
I know it doesn't really help, but most of what I've seen suggested is coming from killing mobs or harvesting.
