In EQ1, males playing female toons was a bit more common and from what I hear (I didnt play EQ1) most people didnt think much of it or question those player's sexuality solely based on the shape of their pixels. I think everyone just assumed all pixels were representing male players.
However, in EQ2, with the advent of Ventrilo and Teamspeak, the so called 'proof' of gender is now easily obtained. When people fail to speak in Ventrilo, etc, they're called liars. It seems to me that the people who get most worked up about this issue are the people who are using EQ2 as an online dating service.
A somewhat interesting turn of this problem was when I was levelling up my female paladin. I always lead my group, and tailored my xp groups; often running with the same 4 or 5 people every night. Most of them believed I was a male irl, for whatever reason, despite my toon being female.
Trust me, it would have been better if I never mentioned I was a female. As soon as they heard that, I suddenly had to deal with flirting, accusations that I was a liar, challenges to my course of leading the groups; you name it. This still happens to me when I'm playing my tank. In truth, it amuses me. Silly boys.
