Default Re: Just what does "AOE Tank" mean?

Encounters need more Jazz. Honestly. There's too little deciding factors of what class will make a good tank for an encounter.

There should be MORE situations where certain classes are needed to win an encounter. You know certain fights where specific classes need to jump in and tank? That shit should be used all the time.

God forbid a raid force needs to change up their structure once in a while, rather than just adjust to the changes made each patch.

Because you can. Using the same argument above, if both tanks can tank a mob/encounter and both do it well, then why wouldn't you look for the tank that added something more? The easiest and most noticeable way to add more to the raid is dps which = mobs dying faster. That's why tanks are focused on dps because it's the perverbial "final frontier". If you can tank well and dps well at the same time, then you're a multi-tool tank adding to every facet of every encounter.
I was actually agreeing with you. This is the "whole" quote of what I said:

"The amount of mobs a tank can safely pull is determined by survivability." Then why are we so concerned with the amount of damage we can do? When I am soloing I pull multiple encounters not only because I will survive, but because I can clear areas quickly, thus complete quests faster and safer."

My point on this was that atm SKs are just sick in the AoE dps department. If we can clear multiple encounters, not just multi-mob single encounters, then we are "better" than single mob tanks. So, if our AoE damage is dropped by 20%, we STILL can take mulitiple encounters it will just take 20% longer to kill them all. Also, if the value of a tank is gauged on survivability, I questioned why people were bent out of shape about a drop in DPS. Truth is people want both. Great dps and the ability to survive as a tank. I have said a few times in this thread that I am having a great time wiping out MULTIPLE blue heroic encounters solo. So, I think a drop in dps is a called for here.

I wish, like another poster, that there were variations in the raid content for the various tanks. I wouldn't go so far as to say that there should be mobs that ONLY a monk can take, but it would be nice if you could run a raid zone with multiple tanks and switch off on certain mobs because it is easier with certain tanks. Not IMPOSSIPLE without a specific tank, but easier. I don't think that would be too difficult with a little imagination...

multiple or group encounters are the SK's bread and butter i call it crowd control. its IMO our main way to keep and maintian agro against those crazy high end dpser's like those assasins that dont know how to dump agro and then complain that you cant hold agro on a single target encounter or those bruisers with that divide and concour. Before the update alot of people called us paper tanks and after the update they complain we are to powerful. I think we are perfect the way we are and i never played eq1 but all that i know that did say we as of now still dont compare to how awsome the SK was in eq1. And honestly i thought other toons would rather have a tank that can do alittel crowd control instead of struggleing to hold agro especially on single target encounters. but thats just my opinion
