Some questions about tanking techniques
I'm only an instance tank so forgive me if these questions seem a little daft.
1. What is the job of an off-tank?
2. What is melee jousting?
I may have more questions later

Re: Some questions about tanking techniques
Without trying to be nasty - go ask this question in the N00B forum area please, this is for SK discussion, not general noob tank questions.

Re: Some questions about tanking techniques
Off tanking comes in various ways..
1. handling adds to a named encounter
2. protecting rest of the group vs adds in any fight
3. tanking nameds in multiple nameds encounters
Like WoEx2 (Wards of Elements).. I'm usually called in to tank the Tomes in the Book encounter.. while the main tank focus on the volumes.. The tomes memblur or mem wipes, so I have to make sure they are on me at all times..
Or the Daykara encounter in the same instance.. They use my tank to make sure any of the demons that spawn are pulled away from the squishies and pull them to tank so he can get aoe aggro on em
Melee jousting
I assume this means running out of reach from a nameds aoe. Squishies (ranged dps like wiz, ranger, healers etc) will allready be standing at max range and might not have to move(depending on how far the range is on the aoe). When the aoe is over, you run back to named and continue to dps.

Re: Some questions about tanking techniques
Cool thanks Vulkan. I sort of knew the answer to the first one and I get the melee jousting one now, thanks.
Fable, sorry, didn't even cross my mind to visit the other forums, I come direct here because I'm an SK and would normally ask SK questions. Will go there next time

this is the forums for noob SK's, like yourself to ask noob questions, which the OP did, so let him be. He's asking for tips, be constructive or get out.

Re: Some questions about tanking techniques
I think the primary job of an offtank is to hold the #2 aggro spot. So if anything happens to the main tank (stuns, death, stealth afk) the mob goes to the offtank instead of the dps. However maintaining the #2 aggro spot is key...a good offtank will never steal aggro from the main tank. IMHO, its more difficult to stay at the #2 spot than it is to stay at the #1 spot.
After that, the second most important duty is to tank adds. But to be honest, only maybe 1/2 of TSO raid encounters require offtanks to actually tank stuff. And if you're a second string offtank, you'll only be tanking 1/10th.
The last priority of an offtank is dps. You should be expected to do decent dps because you aren't needed for tanking duties all the time. You should be parsing somewhere between 50% and 70% of the top parser of your guild. Don't expect to outparse predators/chanters/sorcerers, but you should be beating healers/bards/other tanks.

Whatever asswipe, glad to see your post was as constructive as mine - you fucking useless hypocrite
Jumping onto the moral highground and calling me out on a perfectly understandable response (or at least perfectly understandable to all but fucking morons like you it seems) to the OP is as much a waste of your own time, as it is mine and indeed the OP

Why does an 'instance tank' care about the job of an off-tank? If you're talking about heroic instances, there should only ever be one tank in a group. Otherwise it's a wasted slot.
Jousting is jousting. When it's called, moonwalk like MJ. Simple as that.

Re: Some questions about tanking techniques
I care because one day I may get asked to off tank and then I'd look a dick asking what I'm supposed to do, instead I can come here and start a flame war
Meze, thanks for your comments.
