Yet at the same time you dismiss a "slug" of a dog. However loyal and compassionate that slug may be. Is it not better to desire an older or wiser dog that does not have the excitement or curiosity of youth. One that you do not need to tie up in the yard because you know they will still be there when you get home. No matter how boring or "slugish" that may seem.

No, I want one that's a little more energetic than I am, loves loud noises, acts like a puppy, licks my face and snuggles but can still hold it's own when thrown in the pit and likes to dig holes in the yard.
One that I don't have to tie up - that still goes out and does it's own thing while remaining loyal.

I'm not even gonna go down this "dog" path you guys chose. It still implies that one is the master. Even the idea that there is a rope, no matter how long implies that you're restricting their freedom to do what they want and make their own choices which means they can't be their true selves. That's also a large part of why he would rebel, same goes for the opposite sex.

Drop the insecurities and actually trust that they will do the right thing by you when it truly matters, if they do something that makes them undeserving of that trust, move on to someone that will or allow them the chance to prove to you unconditionally why they are deserving of a second chance.
