Default critical mitigation ?

I have recently spent some shards to get Elucidated Manaweave stuff.
My UI says that critical mitigation "reduce the damage of critical attacks" but my guildies say that this is useless if you don't raid end game TSO mobs.
2 questions :
1/ does crit mit only worth for those end mobs that I'm not gonna meet now.
2/ is it only, as UI says, a percentage ? because a 10 percent crit mit is then a bi useless for us, paper tanks....

If a mob has a crit modifier of 1.2 then what happens when it crits is that the amount of damage is multiplied by that amount. In other words it does 120% of the damage it would have done without the crit mod. You would need 20% critical mitigation to completly mitigate the extra damage. The first 100% is mitigated by normal mitigation to the type of damage the mob does

Example.
A mob critically hits you for 10k poison damage. If the mobs crit mod was 1.2 then without crit mit you would take

10k poison which is mitigated by your normal poison resist

AND

a further 2k poison damage which is also mitiagted by poison resist

If you had 20% critical mitigation you would take

10k poison which is mitigated by your normal poison resist and thats it because the critical component would have been completely mitigated.

You dont need any of this crit stuff in group instances because the mobs hit for shit anyway. Its for high end raid mobs really.

Once you end up seeing the entire raid wipe more or less instantly once a regular (non-you-messed-up-the-script) AoE hits, then you'll know that you'll need crit mit. Simple as that as a non-tank.
As a tank, when you get wtf-pwned by critical double attacks off debuffed mobs, that's a good sign. ;)
General advice instead of listing mobs, you'll notice when you'll need it if you just check your logs.

Thanks both explanations made me understand the whole system.
I'll wait till I see a regular (non-you-messed-up-the-script) AoE hits wiping us... hehe, not hard to see ! Then I will know what I need, and may be will smile because I already have it ;)

I don't think anyone in Synergy ever said that crit mitigation is useless Ailees. However I don't think that the crit mitigation that one or two legendary set pieces offer (you are looking at what.. 2 or 3 points then?) is gonna make a huge difference over for example VP/SoH-level gear. I understood that the progression in TSO is built on needing more fabled set crit mit gear as you get further into the raiding zones (or bringing a huge amount of healers, but that's less fun :P).

For the stuff we are working on atm (thet mainly) I really don't think crit mit is a huge issue, and when we get further in we will be obtaining more fabled set gear specifically for the crit mit.

Getting the 2nd tier legendary sorceror shoulders is a good idea though, cause 8% base dmg increase is jummie, and maybe it helps you finally beat your guilds' warlock

AFAIK raid mobs (specifically the bosses or near to boss) have a crit modifier as Murahaha said. The bosses in the easier zones have say 1.2 while the fuck off ones in the hardest zones get something like 1.8-2 = needing 80%-100% to mitigate against the crit dmg component. The tank is gonna take more autoattacks/spells/ca's than anyone else in the raid so is going to suffer from lack of +crit more than anybody else.....until an ae hits, which is gonna affect everyone within ae range

I would imagine that the better shard gear would provide the needed crit mitigation for all of say TotMC though.

you dont need CRIT MITI gear for TotmC! not even for Gynok...
even in palace you can go till anashti sul ( last named) without crit gear....
