I just finally gave in and am trying duel wield for the first time. Do you all seriously try and time your CA's between duel wielding auto attacks or what?

yes we do but we do it by matching our weapon delays or atleast matching how they are divisible by our combat cast/recov times

With how laggy some of these raid zones are, it seems almost impossible to time anything for any substantial amount of time. What's sad about the lag is that its almost became acceptable now.

CA recovery does not affect auto attacks, most ca's are .5 or .4 with sailwind. When duel wielding you either want like delays as in 4.0/4.0 or one with half delay as in 4.0/2.0. It's important for a Swash to have good timing because almost half or your dps comes from auto attacks.

I was under the impression that CA recovery *does* affect auto attacks?

I have tried as an experiment to keep autoattacks from firing by chaining CAs and it just isn't possible. Autoattacks fire when ready, assuming your recovery timer has passed. The AA will fire before you can get the next CA off, even if it is queued. This is only an issue when you DW or SW fast weapons, like the OP that can significantly reduce your damage output, and the AA swing is less then the 1 second or .8 second of the casting/recovery time of CAs. With 4.0 second weapons I am having a hard time justifying worrying too much about trying to time CAs between swings.

Yes, you will get auto attacks in, but only after the recovery timer has expired (apparently). So autoattack will trigger in the split second between the recovery timer expiring and the next (queued) CA beginning to be cast.

What this means is if you have a 4 delay weapon hasted to, I dunno, say 2 seconds for the sake of argument, and your CA takes 0.5s to cast, and you have a 0.5s recovery time, if you spam CAs then each autoattack will be delayed by an average of 0.5s. Which would cost you (quick head maths) 20% of your autoattack damage because, although you're attacking, you're attacking more slowly because of autoattack delays.

Against that has to be weighed that if you time your CAs, you're theoretically reducing your CA damage for exactly the same reason. However, losing half a second out of a thirty second timer is a much smaller proportional loss.

I'm no expert, mind, is just what my present understanding is.

So now you're implying that my auto attacks are delaying my casting order? Ask yourself if this sounds more logical then recovery not effecting weap delay's or attacks.

Read more carefully Your auto attacks delay your CAs if you are timing CAs. If you have a CA which refreshes every 30 seconds and you are holding off on using it for ~half a second in order to fit in autoattacks, you are effectively delaying your CAs by a small amount.

If you read the link I posted, a poster there claims the effect of recovery timers on autoattacks has been tested using dragoon's reflexes.

A test is worth an awful lot more than "sounds more logical".

If I can be bothered, I'm tempted to try and replicate this test, just because the mechanics of the recovery timer have been bothering me for ages.
