Regressing to XP
So...I am tired of the pos that is Vista. Resource hog, locks up and crashes various games, and I all around hate it; probably as much as it hates me. As such, I am planning on switching back to XP once I make back up CDs and find a copy. Any advice or suggestions? Are the patches for XP for dual core machines and so on still viable?

Re: Regressing to XP
Your sig sounds familiar. Did a Sith say that? Sounds like something Palpatine might say.

Re: Regressing to XP
I'm a total Star Wars nerd. Anyway, just throw the XP cd in, reformat the drive and install XP, then just download all the updates from the Windows Update site.

Re: Regressing to XP
<3 Star Wars. I have the Sith code running around as a signature someplace as well, heh.
In any event, yeah, pretty much what I planned to do. Troublesome, but getting killed because Vista blows is even worse. Supposedly there were issues with dual core machines with XP at one point? I guess I'll need to find those patches. My old machine that ran XP was practically ancient~

Re: Regressing to XP
I don't have an issue with dual core utilization on my Core2Duo. However, with my old AMD processor I had to download a patch from AMD.

AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ (2 CPUs), ~3.0GHz copied from my DxDiag file, so meh, we'll see.

Re: Regressing to XP
suggestion from my side: get the network drivers beforehand! if theyre part of your chipset-drivers (onboard nw) then get that, put it on a portable media and install that first, otherwise you might be forced to install some old version from a cd to be able to get recent versions from the internet.
as for amd64s:
get from here: http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/..._13118,00.html
the following:
AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Driver Version 1.3.2.0053 for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 (x86 and x64)
+
AMD Dual-Core Optimizer
the first will contain cool&quiet, great stuff! and the later will contain a fix for games improperly coded (read description on AMDs page)
btw: hope youll install windows xp 64 with your nice cpu spec?

Re: Regressing to XP
Good advice, thanks. Those were actually the drivers I was looking at for my AMD. No idea on XP patches though. ^.^ I'll look into the network drivers, I don't think I have any of the older CDs. As for which XP I plan to install on the system..whichever I can find that will work best I suppose. 64 would be nice. <3
