Default dvd-rw drive acting funky

CD's work, but every time I try and put a dvd in, nothing hapens. i hear the drive click a little bit, like it wants to read it, but it never spins it.

When I put a cd in, that runs like nothin. I've had this problem before, and I'm almost positive it's got something to do with a virtual drive, but i went and deleted the virtuals, and the registry files for all of them. I powered down, unplugged it, powered up, then down, plugged it back in, still nada with DVD's.

Sometimes when I put a cd in, let it autorun, then put a dvd in, it works, but it seems to happen randomly.

And if some stupid FUCK hadn't riveted half of the case to my Dell, I'd just assimilate that drive, and I can't find my chisel.

Try getting a firmware upgrade for the drive. Since you have a Dell, just got to there website and I'm sure there will be an upgrade for it.

Since the latest Windows Update my Vista PC won't play back DVD's. If I didn't know better I'd think they were actively trying to suck, kinda like Aeralik with lowering mage hit rates.

yeah i dont have a dell, well i do, but that's not my gaming rig. i was saying that if half of the case wasn't riveted onto the chassis, i would take the Dell's drive and slap it in my own.

i just pulled the fucker apart and cleaned the laser. The arms still move freely, grease on em looks fine. I can't get the faceplate to the tray to snap back in though.

the first time i booted up my pc, my monitor wouldn't turn on so i unplugged it, worked fine after that. gonna try it again. if it doesn't work in just gonna hammer the one out of the dell, or buy a new one. along with my phone call to logitech and getting a free G9. Bastards...

EDIT: Ok, turned on this time. I put in a movie DVD and it ran right away. But games don't seem to register, which leads me to believe that the laser is fine...

Grabbed a dvd off my shelf, just happened to be Vanguard. popped it in, realized it was disc 2. Ran fine, no problems.

Put Neverwinter Nights 2 in...nothing again. Put disc 1 of Vanguard in, nothing. Put disc 2 of Vanguard back in, still nothing. Arghhh.

Apparently Hellgate London and Bioshock work as well now, too. But BF2142 and NwN2 still don't work, and I don't see any scratches or splotches.

I KNOW HG:L and Bio didn't run before.

Still try upgrading the firmware for the drive but it sounds like its gonna keep failing regardless.

Get the model number off it and find the latest firmware from a Google search. Should take you a total of 5 minutes from start to finish.

Heres a start if its a Samsung:
