Currently I have 1.5 gigs of RAM and I want to upgrade. (I have 2 256 mb sticks and a 1 gig stick and willing to take out any that I need to)
Should I just get two 1 gig sticks and have 3 gigs or should I get two 2 gig sticks and have 4 gigs ( lamil said I shouldn't since my pc is about 4 years old and it would be a waste.)

Just get 2 2gb sticks, as cheap as ram is anything else is dumb.

Are you sure your board supports 2GB DIMMs? A lot of older ones don't.
