Is there some sort of free anti-virus I can download to clean up an already infected system? Or do I just have to suck it up and pay the $30-$40 for the license?

Have you tried AVG, its free, dont know how good it is (i use norton) but very popular so worth a try

AVG works great, version 8 was released not too long ago, and is much less of a resource hog than Norton.
You need to do a little digging on the AVG website to find the free version, as they keep it hidden a little bit, but you just need to register it, and It's yours. In my experience it also pairs well with Spybot S&D, for that extra security measure.

Thanks for the responses, I'll be downloading AVG when I get home it looks like. BTW, googling "AVG free" helps keep us lazy people from having to dig ;)

another vote for avg free. It works as good as any of the others, if not better, and uses much less resources than nortan or mcAfee.

lol, gl with that. Almost like, I've never been in a car wreck and drive safe, therefore I need no car insurance. I take a bath every day too, so no need to change by bed sheets.

Seriously, avg has like 2 process files that run and uses less than 2mb of ram and 0.05% cpu. It loads up instantly on start up. Knowing that I won't accidently get one, or someone else on my pc get one, and also the possibility of passing one on to others even without my knowledge is well worth that. fyi you can get viruses, trojans, etc without actually clicking to download something.

Also try NOD32, they make a pretty stable A/V. Stay away from Norton..
