My solution to crashing on Vista
For months I used to have the worst uptime on Vista 64 SP-1 (and prior), something like 15 hours between full system self-poweroffs. Whenever I had a DVD playing during EQ2 it was exponentially more unstable. But now I've been running for almost a week straight, a quad-core Q6600/4GB RAM with GeForce 8800 on a 400 Watt power supply with no crashes whatsoever, no matter how hard I burden the system.
As I was clued in on the AoC forums, the problem was that some software corrupted DirectX itself, possibly with an ignorant file overwrite. I only have three games, EQ2, UT3, and AoC, and if none of them fucked the PC up during install then I have to blame Windows Update.
If you are at your wit's end with crashing, I offer you to try this out: go to the URL below, download the DirectX March 2008 runtime, and install it.
Download details: DirectX Redist (March 2008)

Re: My solution to crashing on Vista
DirectX corruption wouldn't cause your machine to power off. I call coincidence.

Re: My solution to crashing on Vista
Power off, black screen, reboot, any number of ways of dying. Not the point.

Re: My solution to crashing on Vista
Never had a problem with Vista other than the occasional 32bit program that won't run on 64bit Vista at all.

Re: My solution to crashing on Vista
My problems with Vista 64 are just 2.
1.) Every now and then playing EQ2, the colors will start to rip across the screen and everything basically looks like shit and then the system locks up and i have to hard reboot. Before vista , same machine ran perfect.
2.) If i leave my machine and after about an hour or 2 when i try to take it out of sleep mode by just moving my mouse, nothing happens, it just stays in sleep mode, sometimes it comes out, sometimes it doesnt and i have to do another hard reboot.
3.) yeah i said 2 but fuck it, the FPS cut in half in windowed mode drives me fucking crazy, i have that desktop crap disabled and it barely helps, I also noticed when i open ACT it cuts down my FPS, open up Vent, it drops just a hair.
Besides that I like vista just wish i knew a way to fix those problems.

I gave you a potential solution. I get the rare color rip but not the lockups anymore.

Re: My solution to crashing on Vista
I play WoW in windowed and take no fps hit compared to fullscreen, this is with aero on too. That's the only game I play in windowed though.
