What the fuck is the cause of this?

It does it randomly. Eventually my computer freezes up, and then unfreezes and everything is back to normal. Wicked fucked up.

Certainly looks like artifacting but before you go throwing the graphics card away I would try reinstalling or updating your graphic drivers and directx. There was a recent directx update (March iirc) so it may be worth giving it a shot. You also didn't mention if it was purely in EQ2. If it is then I would certainly look into it further as I have had many little problems like this from little updates they have done here and there.

Delete everything from your EQ2 directory (the garbage files) except all folders and the eq2.exe. Run the patcher, reinstall, and voila, no more crazy face beams.
