I hate to recommend throwing money at a problem, but the 4850 will kill a 3870 at that resolution for less than $160

Upgrade to vista x 64 for the better use of your rams and get use of the ability of addressing single core to eq2 to work on with.
After surveying to your eq2 directory in dos mode do :
start /affinity 4 /abovenormal eq2.exe

there you have assigned a single core for eq2. On my side difference was 5-8 fps to 25-40 fps at SOH. Hope it works for you too.

And guess what? The 4850 will do the same thing. It will underclock his card when in windowed mode.

Same thing for anyone else who recommends anything in this thread other than a fix for the window/fullscreen bs. Hes talking 80fps which is excellent to 20fps which is horrible by switching modes. Its an ATI issue nothing else.

Buy an Nvidia card? Newegg Zotac 9800GTX superclocked for something like $219.

I shouldn't need vista 64 bit. I have xp 64 bit which can utilize the 4g of ram. bigger word size

I'm not sure if I exactly want to dedicate one of my single cores to the game. I run a lot of things at once since I am trying to learn how to make nice graphics in photo shop, build websites, etc

Plus I'm not sure of the stability and, no offense, I do not know if doing this will affect my systems stability.

I fixed the issue, but I still crashed a ton.

I had to have the game windowed on my primary monitor for some odd ass reason. If someone could explain to me why, that would be awesome.

still crashing tons though.

Nah, my 8800GT 512 runs ~50-60 FPS in Windowed mode. All I have are the NVidia standard drivers.
