Can't Break 20 FPS on a Nice System
Core 2 Quad Core 2.4
4GB DDR2 Corsair Ram
Seagate Barracuda HD
ATi HD3870 by Saphire
Recently built. It only has the programs it needs on it.
Ok... I play eq2 in windowed mode and I cannot seem to break 20fps. (I use dual monitors, so windowed mode lets me take advantage of using both in tandem)
If i go into full screen I can punch up to 80fps no problem.
I speculate it has to do with the ATi card sucking ass on games when they are in window mode. I've tried many things to up the FPS.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me that won't cost me tons of money? I really hope I am not forced to play in windowed mode...
Thanks,
Kradun

what resolution do you run in in windowed (ie your desktop resolution) vs in full screen (w/e you set your res to in eq2)?

The ATI card, when in windowed mode, is underclocking itself. Basically it doesn't think you are playing a game and it cuts its power by at least half.
Mine use to do that, the latest ATI Catalyst driver package changed that for me though. I'm on 64bit Vista or I'd download the OMEGA drivers for it instead.

Hmm I downloaded the latest a week ago, 2 days ago, and today.
No go I used the catalyst package for xp x64.
Any other suggestions?
Edit***
I just got the latest drivers AGAIN tonight.

Still no change. 20ish fps. I guess I'll be in full screen until someone can advise further, or until I break something fucking around (

Re: Can't Break 20 FPS on a Nice Syste
I have an ATI 3870x2
If you go into the catalyst control center, and under ATI overdrive, it shows your current GPU and memory clocks.
Mine sitting at rest in windows is:
300 GPU
901 Memory
When WoW is fullscreen its:
825 GPU
901 Memory
Those are the default settings with nothing changed. Like I said, it clocks it down when it thinks its doing nothing. Try the Omega Drivers for it. Google is your friend.

Re: Can't Break 20 FPS on a Nice Syste
I've been googling things(most which have led me to the omega), and I've known about the omega drivers for a long time(every seems to be a fan of them), but I was really hoping to keep things simple with the proprietary drivers.
But I'll give it a shot now Petgroup

Re: Can't Break 20 FPS on a Nice Syste
Here is an update...
I got the omega drivers and uninstalled the ATi ones. It netted me a total of +1 fps in windowed mode and a good 20 in full screen.
I've been tinkering with the options, but is there something specific that I have to do for the HD series of radeon cards?
Edit***
I got the omega drivers and they dont seem to work well with XP 64 bit. They are not made for that I think. I crash every so often now.
Edit2***
Omega drivers royally fucked my os(crash + no boot for 20-45 seconds). Had to boot ubuntu to make sure all the hardware was running fine.
Reverted to ati drivers. Looks like I'm fucked for now.

Re: Can't Break 20 FPS on a Nice Syste
id say just do the chat optimizations if you haven't yet for some extra fps.
