Re: 280 GTX Bad Preformance?
The game was never designed to capitalize on the massive power of the recent generations of GPU's. The truly processing intensive operations are for some asinine reason, 4 years later, still bound to the CPU. I've upgraded from a 7900GTX->8800Ultra->GTX280 in the past few years and while I did see a decent improvement from the 7 to the 8 series, it was nowhere what it should have been. And I still couldn't turn shadows or particles on and expect it to run perfectly. And the GTX280? Heh, worthless for EQ2. Great for games that actually utilize a GPU (i.e. EVERYTHING ELSE DEVELOPED IN THE LAST 4 YEARS), but if you want to see real gains in EQ2, get the best CPU you can afford.
The E8400 is a great price/performance mix and is easily overclockable to 4.0ghz on air cooling. I use it and highly recommend it, I saw tremendous gains in EQ2 after I installed one.
SOE backed themselves into an unfortunate technology corner when they developed this game engine 6-7 years ago. That's excusable; no one is a prophet when it comes to IT. The fact that this game is supposedly a highly supported ongoing project (i.e. a traditional mainstream MMO) and the situation hasn't been rectified by now is not excusable.
