Re: Buying a new TV
If you're willing to explore a flexible upgrade and are ok with using a monitor as a TV then may I recommend looking into the 30"s from Dell/Samsung/Hitachi. I've been using the Dell 3007WFP on my system and sweet jesus it is amazing for gaming. It's also great for general computing.. the 2560x1600 native affords a huge amount of landscape to view multiple windows/browsers/apps simultaneously. If you're using the TV side of it primarily for movies, then obviously no extra hardware is needed. Grab a TV tuner card and you can run your cable service through it too.
It's more of a "media center" type solution though, but the super high native res really appeals to me as a gamer.
