What the hell type of computer do you need to raid on extreme quality?

So I bought a new computer lately,
These are the specs

Processor: Intel® Core™ i7 Processor 920
Motherboard: Intel X58 Chipset (x16, or x8 + x8)
Graphics: nVidia GTX260 SC with 896MB memory
Memory: 3x2G 1600MHz DDR3 gaming memory
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 64bitPro
WE Index rating 5.9 (Highest rating there is)

ok, i know there is probabaly stuff quite a bit better then this.. but this pretty good..

I can only run Extreme Quality at around 10-30 fps (Not raiding)
Even on Very High Quality im still only running at 30-50 fps (Not Raiding) when raiding very high quality only plays at 15-35 fps

My question is, how the hell was there people claiming to raid with full graphics running 50+ fps on extreme?

I even seen some videos on youtube of people running eq2 on extreme quality from like 2 years ago... How was that even possible? or is there something wrong with my computer? should i be able to get better frame rate?

I would even be happy getting at least a constant 20 fps on extreme quality, which is very playable. Anything under 20 seems quite noticeable.

I know Very High quality still looks very nice.. but it is quite a noticeable difference between Very High Quality and Extreme Quality.

Here's the deal:

The game has a shitty engine. It was made way back in the Shader Model 1 days, and SOE believed that PCs would be increasing clock speed on a single CPU exponentially over time.

The GPU is barely used, and it hits a single thread on the CPU really hard.

Until the shader revamp (which should be with GU54, but could get pushed back again), it's always going to run like shit, and if the revamp is done properly, machines a fraction as powerful as that one will be able to run it well maxed out raiding.

You will see the biggest improvement if you were to overclock that 920 cpu from 2.66 to like 3.8 or 4ghz heck even 3.6ghz OC would really help. But yea still heavy CPU bound till shader revamp is done.

I am sure your pc is a dell or something, prolly unable to overclock that well. Should have tossed me the money, would have been able to build it much better for much cheaper, and still pocketed a nice profit compared to what you paid them.

The old shader is what taxes the CPU? What about particle effects?

Nah, its not a Dell, I didnt buy this one from any department store.

I also recently upgraded to an i7 920 which I overclocked to 4GHz and yes it does help a bit. But not that much.. I posted about my experience with the upgrade and EQ2 performance here...

As Morara already pointed out this game has an archaic graphics engine. Most of the up to date games I own look amazing and run smooth as silk, but this one looks its age and runs like a bag of shit most of the time.

Hopefully the shader update will improve things, until then there are plenty of other games that will love your new hardware...

Set everything to max except turn off Complex Shaders. Yes, you lose some of the lighting and shadow quality, but it'll run 100% better and still looks pretty damn decent.

I ran EQ2 at 2560x1600, with maxed AA/AF, and everything in game set to max except for Complex Shaders... had no problems with framerate ever.

edit: and yeah, when the shader revamp comes it'll be a lot easier to max this. Until then, overclock your CPU as already stated. If you don't know how, there are about a million guides you can google.

Complex shaders is one of the most important tweaks though, the game is seriously ugly w/o imo.
