Nice computer!

I actually was thinking of building a new computer and those parts are basically 90% the same as what I am thinking of, except I plan to splurge for SSD, a bit sturdier case, and a mobo with more features. I'm still waiting though because I'm undecided on the graphics card (since I don't know what games I will be playing) and probably will just get Windows 7 flat out instead of installing 2 different OS's in a matter of days.

Finished my new computer finally ><

I <3 my Intel SSD. It'll run 4Ghz but the vcore addition isn't worth the 200mhz performance difference imo.

Running the 5850 or 70 on that?

Decent OC on it as well - assuming you don't really want to push it, because I have seen 4Ghz on the 860 on air fairly regularly. (With using a few different HSF)

NVM just read the last statement, lol - I didn't think it was that huge of a jump in Vcore, but maybe I am mistaken.

5850, the 5870 won't fit in the case I have.

This chip does 3.8Ghz @ 1.275 bios vcore with load line enabled which is about 1.3 vcore in Prime95 8 thread load on blend - 24 hours stable with high temp of about 85c.

It'll do 4Ghz but that takes 1.4vcore in bios which is like 1.42 in Prime which gets up around 95c full 8 thread load and fuck that, so not worth it for 200mhz imo.

That is a pretty big jump, hmm I didn't think that it was that high but I guess I was wrong.

You had a 920 before the 860 correct? If so what are your thoughts on both of them?

I have everything configured, but am trying to grab a 5850 whenever I can - but it seems due to my work schedule I get on too late.

Nope I never went 920, I think it really just depends on if you're interested in gulftown or not. I can't possibly see a use for six cores before I upgrade again, so 1156 was a better fit for me.

As for the vcore I think that's pretty common. Most of these Lynnfields scale well to 3.8Ghz with minimal vcore increases and then hit a break wall going for 4 to 4.2Ghz. Not that it isn't possible on air, it is, but like I said I personally don't think the heat is worth the minimal performance gain. As it is this computer destroys everything I do including EQ2 (finally!).

I'm happy with my decision to go 1156 and I'm happy with my results.

920 vs 860 really comes down to six core chips and multi-gpu setups.

Well as long as it doesn't get canceled, I finally found a lone 5850 (MSI brand) for sale through Amazon.com - for $299 (yeah they drastically increased in price, lol)

I was almost positive I was going to go 920 - but the price went up $9, and newegg has a $30 combo discount on the 860 / Gigabyte UD4P which is the mobo I was looking at if I went the P55 route.

So finally the mobo/proc 8gig of ram (curious what you are running Gaige) is around the same cost (and sometimes less depending on RAM) as the x58 setup I was going to get.

I'm using these:

Newegg.com - G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000) Desktop Memory Model F3-16000CL9D-4GBRH - Desktop Memory

Though they were $99.99 when I bought mine. UD4P is a beast board though, I love mine.

What CPU cooler are you using? I was using stock air for the longest time, 4.0ghz @ 1.35v would be stable for everyday use and gaming on my i5. Prime would fault a thread every now and then unless I was @ 1.4v.

Just installed a Corsair H50 last night which dropped the temps a shitton (obviously over stock). I've pushed as hard as 1.475v to get 4.2ghz stable and temps were still under 80c in Prime and IBT.

Personally tho, I'm sticking to 3.6ghz @ 1.3volts. I'm done with posteriety overclocks, these i5/i7 builds are PLENTY fast asis.

Just need to sell my kidney to add a SSD raid setup...

Ya but the 750 doesn't have hyperthreading and hyperthreading adds tons of heat when overclocked.

I'm using a Coolermaster V10 and I would've went H50 had I not gotten the V10 for free.
