Pinning would be more amazing if it worked 100% of the time.

Example: I have WoW and FF pinned, only one functions correctly by merging the quicklaunch with the application instance.

And yeah, I know, WoW sucks, yada, yada..

Also, why doesn't the instance display at the end instead of where it's pinned to the bar?
Example Windows Explorer (Libraries):

Bar looks fucked up because it puts the instance within the launch icons.

You shouldn't be using quicklaunch, just pin the stuff you use the most. Also do you use always combine, hide labels?

Also try it with the "Always combine, hide labels" option ticked in Taskbar properties, unless you intentionally want it like that.

Try setting your taskbar on the side of the screen instead of the bottom. This wasn't really used much previously because older versions of Windows didn't have the "icon only" dock style. I switched to it a month or two ago though and I love it. My actual desktop is completely clean; I just pin what I use most often to the taskbar, and open any other random program through the start menu (although it's extremely rare that I have to go off the taskbar).

Those are pins. I was just calling the un-instanced versions quicklaunch because I didn't know the appropriate terminology for unexecuted pins.

I like seeing the labels because I often run several instances of notepad or whatever and its a pain to have to mouse over and then determine the correct window.

I mean, on a quick glance I have trouble determining which icon is the WoW instance and which is the pinned shortcut. And I'd much prefer to be able to see the titles of the 3 notepads I have open without having to mouse-over.

And I still don't understand why the explorer icon doesn't move past the pinned shortcuts once it's launched as an instance.

The entire point of pinning them is so that multiple copies don't fill up the taskbar.

We just went through a Windows 7 rollout at work, and the overall opinion from our engineers (myself included) is that it's pure Win.

Everyone went from WinXP to Windows 7 Ultimate, and had absolutely no software or driver issues at all (which is pretty amazing since some of us are using some pretty archaic apps for some clients)

Not to mention the Windows 7 Backup and Restore is pure and absolute WIN. Makes blowing down images completely trivial, and no longer do we need to use Ghost / Acronis, etc...

Only issue we had with that process is the WD My Book Essentials are not certified for Windows 7, and are not loaded on boot (which is a pain in the ass, but a new firmware release is in the works to get this working) which means you can't use it to restore from at this time.

I made my WinXP machine into a Virtual machine (using VM Converter) just in case I needed to do something in WinXP that Windows 7 didn't allow - and I haven't brought the VM up yet.

I'd like the taskbar if it hide the pinned shortcut after the instance launched and then moved the instanced past the other pinned shortcuts. But with WoW (and I'm sure other executables that derive instances) it doesn't work correctly, the instance and shortcut both exist so instead of having less "wasted" space it has both placeholders which defeats its whole purpose.

My other complaint is of course cosmetic, but it would be a lot easier to read the bar if you always knew your pinned shortcuts existed before your running instances.

That's actually not a bad idea, it's easier to tell the instances from the pinned shortcuts on the left hand side. But I don't know if I can get use to that after being condition to a bottom bar for so long.
