Default New Computer

Hey all,

Wife's video card fried on her and instead of making her wait for the RMA. Was gonna get her a new computer and use her old one as my gaming computer instead of my laptop (which I think the hard drive is going to fail on me soon).

Wanted some input on the following parts (trying to keep total cost under $1500 CAD).

Any reason you're not using newegg? Those prices are a lot higher than they should be. The processor and ram are a +$70 CAD difference! And I'm too lazy to calculate the rest.

Assuming this is for your wife's (who's a non-gamer) I'm not sure why you made some of these choices. The video card? Cant see a non-gamer needing that. An $80 heatsink? Seems a bit excessive for a someone who's not pushing a major overclock. You can get a more than adequate cooler for $30 and for $10 more you can get a lot better solution like the H50 if this machine is going to be overclocked.

Perhaps I'm misinterpreting and this computer is for you. If so, it doesn't make much sense to me that you are buying a (pre-built?) computer for your wife and doing an entire rebuild just because the video card died. Why wouldn't you just wait for the card RMA and build a new machine for yourself instead of buying two new machines?

I didn't like working with that heatsink FYI--I thought it was a piece of shit. I'd also pick out a different motherboard if it was me as well, not a big fan of that Gigabyte.

Sorry, forgot to mention that she plays EQ2 alongside of me and wants a computer that can play on max graphics or nearly max. I can overclock the computer for her.

Also, the Processor and ram are cheaper but some of the other components are not? Plus with NCIX I can drive there in 10 minutes and pick everything up. Newegg I have to wait for shipping times (which also costs extra). Unless I am missing something vital.

That Gigabyte is sick tbh. Looks good to me though I'd get a Corsair H50 instead of the Noctua and a 5770/5850 instead of the GTX 275.

I'll take your word for it, I have just had horrible luck with Gigabyte lately and DOA motherboards

Pretty sure the 5850, 5870's are back ordered until january. So you might be waiting awhile on those cards. The 5700 series is a repacked shit version of the 4800 series. I'd just stick with the GTX 275. The 285 is a good card but once you OC the 275 its about the same for less money.

I can't recall the last time I paid shipping at NewEgg, perhaps it's different in Canada.

Regardless, you're throwing away a lot of money buying a retail OS. To me, between the OS, MB, CPU and RAM there is enough justification to order online and pay for expedited shipping if you have to.

CPU (+30), MB (+4), RAM (+43), OS(+98) .. you're spending $175 more on the same components. But, that said, go buy that PSU from NCIX before the sale is over (I think it ends today or tomorrow). That's an awesome deal.

If it were me, I'd do two orders:

NewEgg.ca
Motherboard - -4
CPU - -30
RAM - -43
OS - -98 Newegg.ca - Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders - Operating Systems (Or here if you want the NCIX equivalent, -7 instead)

NCIX.com
PSU - Corsair TX750W 750W
HD - Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB
GPU - GeForce GTX 275
HS - H50 NCIX.com - Buy Corsair Cooling Hydro Series H50 High Performance CPU Cooler System LGA775 LGA1366 LGA1156 AM2 AM3 - CWCH50-1 In Canada.

Like others have said I'd prefer a 5870, but you wont find one. Perhaps with the money saved you can pony up for a cheap 60GB SSD.

Please stop doing drugs, the 5770 is as fast as a GTX 275/4890 but it has DX11 and Eyefinity support and its also cheaper thus a better buy.
