Here's my thoughts.

Non-MT healers should definately try to DPS on trash and fights which require little/no healing.

MT healers can do either. Honestly, 400-700 DPS isn't gonna make or break a raid on trash mobs and there's nothing more demorallizing to your DPS classes when the MT goes down for no apparent reason.

On most trash its rediculously easy to keep the tank up. To the point we had a chest issue in MMIS the other night and are raid leader (Defiler) stayed in MMIS and left the haealing to me and the warden in EH till the DEV responded. WE cleared all the trash we needed to on the first floor and I still had plenty of time to DPS. I wasn't able to go all out but I found time to blow through my Damage spells and to time my auto attack. The only time healing was a issue is when we had a roamer add and even then it wasn't to bad.

I agree with Izzdar and Dants. Even in the MT group there is usually opportunity to DPS some. On trash and most names it's easy to keep the tank up. Hell even the reactives cast pre-fight will tic to expiration if you have a competent warding partner. And it takes about 3 seconds to cast all your debuffs.... what else you gonna do till your reactives expire? Play LON i guess.

Though i've only recently began to DPS with my templar I certainly find it adds to my game. Although I'm sure i still have some improvements to make I'm impressed with the numbers i've pulled with little effort. Smite lines has certainly helped with any mana concerns had with spamming DD's. Also collecting a high INT/proc set of gear for those days your not in the MT group. If you're in the OT group and it's not a fight where he's off-tanking you're wasting a spot by not contributing more than a group reactive that's not going to trigger once anyways.

I'd say it's more about who else is in your group that'll determine what you can pull off as a templar dps wise. A shitty warder or not equiped tank in those pickup groups/ raids can make it so you don't have time to cast debuffs let alone DDs/DOTS.

There are certain times when not to dps and keep the queue clear for cures/heals... Treyloth comes to mind... but even then after a cycle of curing and refreshing reactives there is usually time to do a round of DD/Dots to him.

If the Tanks Green / the reactives are up/ the debuffs are >10s or more away from expiring spam a couple nukes... it's the least you can do. Trash or OT group... yaulp away and swing that big hammer too. Most of my healing is done before the fight with the reactives on/before the pull.

Here's to topping heal parses and catching up to furies (well shitty furies anyways) on the DPS parse

Just did 1400 zw in FTH in OT grp i fucked it up on some mobs .. and screwed my parse but i think still good #
with over 100k heals

cant edited more but 1547 ZW for MMIS w/o stake or miracle and i did 220k heals

heh, but yeah, 500-800 dps ZW is easy to accomplish without even trying, and if trying its not very hard to push 1200. I think I did like 800 dps on floor 3 EH last week in all normal healing gear and without putting much thought into it. Zonewide is pretty meaningless for a templar. When you have to go pure healing on certain mobs, your dps will be cut down a ton.

Also depends on how long the raid is. Im specced for healing, not dps, and quite frankly I get bored of dpsing and of healing after too much time goes by. DPS classes only have to worry about parsing, while we always have to stop to heal, cure, etc, and it does kind of suck since its nice to see how high we can get but it rarely happens due to our other responsibilities.

Anything besides MT healer as a healer blows as a templar. Cant go balls out dps most of the time, and nor do you fill your time with healing. Maybe im just a lazy bitch after a year and a half.
