How to not suck at healing
Healing is really simple and I don't understand why people suck so much at it, so here is how to not suck at healing.
You cast heals. Yes, it really is that simple. You just cast heals, and you keep casting heals. You keep casting heals even if the tank doesn't need heals. You are just always casting heals, especially the group heal and group reactive. You don't wait for people to need those heals, you just cast them as soon as they are up. Half of what you are casting for is proc's, and this is why you also keep reverence up, because it proc's stuff. Don't wait for reactives to run out before casting them again, just cast them as soon as they are up for the proc's.
If the tank is really getting his shit pushed in after you have casted repent, both reactives, and the group heal, you start casting your direct heals while the other shit is down. I don't care if the tank is at full life, you cast the direct heals anways because he might not be at full life when the heal lands, and after the heal lands you'll have a reactive or group heal up again to cast.
Precasting cures. Go into options, particle effects, put the particle quality on something other than low, the min and max distance to the max, and the max particle size to 0, and the number per character to 1 (you may also want to increase your shader distance for some mobs under performance). This lets you see casting animations. Learn casting animations that mobs do and start to time cures to hit right after the animation finishes. It makes life easy.
If your gear choices don't suck, and you follow these simple instructions, you won't suck either.
Disclaimer: This applies to all healing classes, not just Templars. You should be casting your heals regardless and not waiting for shit to happen before doing it.

Spec holy shield and cast it on your assassins when jousts are called and 1/24th of your raid won't care if you otherwise suck at healing.

Re: How to not suck at healing
ok like lets be serious here. some might say these are basics, but this short text does infact describe like 80% on what you gotta do while raiding and is very spot-on at that. would be awesome to have every healer in the game read this.

welcome to 4 years ago.
Sadly, most healers still cant perform 50% of the previously described tasks if they tried.

Re: How to not suck at healing
While it might be true that just brainlessly (that's no charge against Iheals btw) casting heals non-stop is the best way to heal your group because of procs, I refuse to do that, not only because it insults my intelligence, but also because I prefer spot-healing and cross-curing as long as my reactives are on my group+tank. The only instanced mobs where I have to cast heals non-stop (at least for a while) are Gynok,Ykesha (only getting started on him atm), and the 2 trash "traps" in palace.

Re: How to not suck at healing
I agree with what you are saying up to certain point. The point that constant healing becomes a problem is when there is not enough power to heal. I did the constant healing thing for the past couple of months and found that by half way through the long fights I was out of power. I like to think I'm a badass healer, but when it comes down to it all I was doing is mashing buttons so I had to change the strategy. Understand that there is a difference in Raid healing and just group/instance healing. In group healing situation mash your buttons have a good time. However in a raid timing is everything. If you are wasting your big heals on a group when they have very little health gone is like burning Spirit Tap (Mystic Mythical Weapon) right at the beginning of a fight. Its a ridiculous waste of resources.
The whole purpose of a healer (Templar or other) is to turn power into health. If you are consuming power and not converting it into health, then you are wasting power. The wards and reactives should be up at the beginning of the fight and trade off your group reactive with your individual reactive (cast on the MT). Unless timers or situation dictates a different strategy. For a templar your spot heals burn more power than any reactive or ward. Use them sparingly and only if you have to (i.e. MT Power or other group Member power is below 50% Health).
In closing until you know how to time your reactives, wards, and spot heals, mash the hell out of the buttons. Your main job is to keep the group/raid alive. Do your job by mashing buttons until you learn the timing.
Good luck,
Juliana

With the right gear (and I'm not just talking about high-end stuff), you won't run out of power.
