ah ok, pardon my lack of attention - so any estimate as to what the % increase in actual blocks I would expect from shield ally with the increase in protection?

You would have to look in your persona window for the block percentage difference as protection vs block % is not linear. Even so, the persona window shows the value against a level 80 opponent where as you're probably fighting higher... and did I mention the progression isn't linear? Luckily a mob's attack rating does not affect your chances to block(only level does).
