Default Spells shoudl be free?

Seems every Tom, Dick & Hariette now expects AdeptIIIs to be made for free, providing they graciously deign to allow you to keep the dusts.

Then other (or the same?) clowns wonder why AdeptIIIs on the broker have like a 5plat markup.

Did I miss something?

80 sage / 79 jeweler (didn't need any more bragging rights) / 73ish alchemist NOT LFW any more (from aforementioned clowns), just getting guild spells into raiding trim now (and puting a few things up on the broker at somewhat less gouging markup).

I tell people right up front what I charge for making something, that way there's no misunderstanding. And I keep a stock of rares (as do most crafters I think) so that if they argue after it's made, I'd hand them back a rare instead of the finished product and wave them on their way.

There's still a lot of people out there who don't understand the work that goes into TSing. It's gotten easier, yes. But that still doesn't give them the right to expect it to be done for nothing. It's how a lot of us make money to continue.

It's too bad some people have these kind of ridiculous expectations. I had a bunch of my spells done up last night and had absolutely no issues with paying some money for the service AND buying the necessary fuels for it as well (I always offer to do that). Seems like there is a lot of newer players recently and I dunno where the hell they came from that they expect handouts but i've noticed it a LOT lately.

Sure crafting has gotten a lot easier, but it still takes a lot of time to get the tradeskills fully levelled along with all the books acquired to make mastercrafted.

Nothing is free. I expect to pay cost for fuels. Even to guildies I at least expect to pay that. But if you want to keep the dust then I would consider that your payment for making the spell. Like the poster above said you have to agree beforehand of the price.

I have an Alchemist and I never charge for making spells if I can keep the dusts. That is because I can use the dusts to make my profits.

If I didn't have an Alchemist and couldn't make potions/poisons with the dusts I would probably charge a fee.

If I get a request to make an adept then I charge for fuel and keep the dusts unless they tell me they want to keep the dusts. If they want the dusts then they have to provide me with all of the harvests. This doesn't count for friends and guildies, I just do those for free.
You shouldn't get irritated by people's expectations, because there is nothing that obligates you to meet those expecations. You simply say, "No, but thank you, this is what I charge."

Default Re: Spells should be free?

I'm not talking about trying to negotiate a price AFTER you've crafted (thats dishonest) - just the number of tells I got when I said I was LFW which assumed 'free' was the going rate.

It has certainly soured my experience as a crafter. Racing to 79/80 for my guild's benefit I had hoped to make a bit on the side. After all I bought advanced books off adventurers who raced to high levels (paying up to 10plat for one).

The weird thing about human nature is that immediately after I got the server discovery on imbued rings I offered to make them for 1plat + rare, and got no takers. Yet buying rares and making rings saw me mark them up by 2plat and still sell within hours. (That only lasted 2 days btw - now jewelry is on the broker for < rare costs).

Spells though for some reason are 'supposed' to be free.

NVM that's my rant over - time to get some more adventurer levels.

For me, I usually craft for free, but mention that I take tips. Normally, people tip really well and then sometimes I get very little, but it all balances out, imo. I also always keep the dust unless the person asks for it.

Spells definitely shouldn't be free. If that person doesn't want to spend their time getting a crafter up to high levels then why should they get things handed to them? I don't expect a jeweler to give me free jewelery because I didn't level one up. The money at the end is the reward for working hard to get to the top and I think crafters deserve it. (Although I guess that is a biased opinion since I'm an 80 sage and who doesn't want plat?! )

I have a lvl 80 Sage and you would not believe the people who expect me to do it for only fuel costs. I had to pay ( in the way of fuels and the like ) to get her to 80 and buy all the books. Not to mention it is my time that they are purchasing. I have a set fee for Adept 3's ( T8 I'm charging 30 ).

I had one person bitch to me about it - said he only charges 10g on his 80 Alchy - I said fine - but my price is 30g. Figure they can take it or leave it.

btw I always keep the dust.
