Default Song Of Magic Parsing Question

Has anyone done the same zone twice - once playing Song of Magic and once not playing it - with the same group make up - and used ACT to see if there are less mage resists - dps differences or any noticable differance?

Thanks

If I had to guess, it'd be less than 1% of a difference. There's too much variance in your experiment for it to be practical. You'd be better of trying to theorize it with assumptions.

I doubt I would even bother with Song of Magic even if I had my 2 piece VP set. I swear troub patterns do not exist in our VP instances..

It depends how you look at it. In the first 5 sec of a fight, I think SoM makes a difference. It's just that 5 sec out of a 30 sec to 5 min fight is so small it's makes SoM in generally worthless when looking at the big picture.

The same could be said on avatars, and adds or any other mob where half your raid force is split up and less debuffs are on the mob than normal.

Would be nice if the increases to casting skills were reflected in the resist rates when inspecting your spells. At least that way you'd see an in game mechanic that displays the effects more directly than guesstimating and theorizing on its effects.

Even then I still wouldn't use it for 99.9% of all content unless the gains were significant to the point where resist rates were seeing 5-10% gains on skills actually used.

As it stands most spells seem to land on raid content for 95%+ of the time so unless the entire mechanic was changed on mobs to reflect increases to disruption I don't see it happening.

What would you use instead?

I don't think there's a good alternative except for mana regen, which is worthless if you have an illusionist in your group.

I also think, with a monk and an illusionist, and 2-3 dirges, CoB is up enough to render our haste buff completely worthless as well. This is why I'll drop haste a lot of times before dropping SoM for Reqium.

I personally use aria, arcane tempo with ward, aline's, str\sta and either SoM or RoR depends on the fights usually.. have no idea what to do put after when i'll get second piece bonus

I use SoM if I can. What Dants said about the first 5secs of a fight is relevant. If SoM makes a difference (and Im no ACT junkie, and I dont study Parses in my spare time) then the time I want it to make a difference is the first few seconds of a fight when I am laying down my debuffs. If putting my debuffs on a mob helps others to debuff, DoT and DD the mob then alls well. I would like to know whether it does make a difference or not tho. The problem is on what mobs to run the comparison? You couldnt carry it out effectively with a warlock in grp running their cast buff. Im not sure that doing it on trash will be effective either. I guess the best comparisons would be on named orange mobs.

On long fights SoM does help with healer mana. The ApIII version seems to lower beneficial spell power costs by 20% according to a quick test I made the other night.
