Context is always implied as it is the "subject" of what you are talking about. To take everything out of context would give conversations no meaning, as with every sentence you'd have to reiterate what you were talking about. Welcome to language. Avatar gear will be better than some level 90 gear out there, and as such it is better to be overprepared than under prepared like you guys are.
Irrespective of that, the level 80 avatar gear, helps you do 81, 82, 83, 84 etc. instances easier in the new expansion, doing them faster and getting the gear in them easier, leading to......! Easier and more quickly attainable level 90 raids! Holy Dipshit Batman!

They may help in the general sense. That doesn't mean they are the reason why they have progressed though, there isn't causation shown there, meaning the exploits aren't significant enough to mention. Particularly since "they" are a select few, and not the whole guild.
