There is no 'proper' way to use your roots. If you are more of a nuker approach then you use Undergrowth in combination with the other root spells we have to keep a mob, or mobs, locked down so that you can avoid the mostly melee damage from the mobs by just ranging it. In a melee spec type setup the root spells arent very useful for much unless you're in trouble and need some room to back up and heal.
As far as your AAs go, it depends on how you want to set up your character. I recommend getting Force of Nature and Naturewalk first. Once you have those two end lines I recommend going down druid Agi line. You should go 4 4 4 8 in Agi line (maxing Wild Regeneration). This will give you a pet (charm animal) in most overland zones so it will help your soloing a bit and it will also increase your healing effectiveness via the Wild Regeneration AA. After Agi line I would recommend going down Str line for more DPS or going down Sta line for more healing power. Where you go after Naturewalk, Force of Nature, and Agi line is more a matter of personal preference and play style than anything.
